Just out of interest, how do you avoid the problem of files on the root filesystem which need to be writable, such as /etc/mtab, /etc/HOSTNAME, and /dev/tty*? My current solution which involves copying this stuff to directory under /var (which is on a read/write partition that gets mkfs'd at boot time) and making /etc and /dev symlinks to the copies of the directories under /var, but it's not real pretty.
