Hi,
I also work on a different project on home automation that control from web browser.  I just run into this software called 2net, here is the links :   http://www.2net.co.uk/  ,basically it's a web server. You can collect data and then login to download from web browser.  You can request an evaluation for 60 days and if it works, you can buy a license for $30. I am like yourself, know very limited experience on linux.  Also, my hardware uses Disc-on-chip from Tri-m.  I would happy to exchange information to help us complete the project.  I hope this help.

Subject: How to choose an embedded Linux

Hi,

Please, excuse me for my poor "French" English, and my lack of knowledge in
Linux.

Here is my probleme, i hope that your experience will help me :

I have to choose an embedded Linux as an OS for a little 386 CPU. 4Mo RAM,
(with possible growing up to 36Mo). Ethernet port, watchdog. This card is a
"Rocky 328E-M4" (if somebody knows about it).

My aim is to build a kind of weather station at the top of an isolated
mountain. No power network or telephone line is available. We only have
solar cells for energy, and thus, we look for energy saving. That's the
reason why we use this old and slow processor. But weather measurements do
not realy need high speed processors. Furthermore, this weather station is
"alone" at the top, without anybody nearby. Datas are sended via radio link
and modem to another PC, here in my office. Thus, no user interface as Xfree
are needed.

For energy saving, we will use Disc on Chip or Solid State Disc. This memory
will be limited to hundreds of Mo.

I've noted, that many embedded Linux exist. And i think that maybe one is
more appropriate for our application.

We do not have very high skills in Linux and computer science. We will be
very happy to use a quit "easy to install" Linux, but also enough rich to
allow development to come.

Thanks for your advices,

Guillaume PREVOST
