Hi, I also work on a different project on home automation that control from web browser.  I just run into this software called 2net, here is the links :   http://www.2net.co.uk/  ,basically it's a web server. You can collect data and then login to download from web browser.  You can request an evaluation for 60 days and if it works, you can buy a license for $30. I am like yourself, know very limited experience on linux.  Also, my hardware uses Disc-on-chip from Tri-m.  I would happy to exchange information to help us complete the project.  I hope this help. I've noted, that many embedded Linux exist. And i think that maybe one is more appropriate for our application. We do not have very high skills in Linux and computer science. We will be very happy to use a quit "easy to install" Linux, but also enough rich to allow development to come.
