You might be right but it's strange that it worked minutes before I
reformatted the hard drive. I can't remember now whether disabling the
system boards bios enable plug-n-play was something I should do for
installing for Linux or something I could do for softset2. It's a mute idea
cause my board doesn't have this switch.

What are the best choices for video boards that support OpenGL
under Linux for under $500? Thanks.

Hi Jens,

Look at http://ftp.yggdrasil.com/bible/bible-src/lilo/user/node68.html

it says for LIL-:

LIL-
The descriptor table is corrupt. This can either be caused by a
geometry mismatch or by moving
/boot/map without running the map installer.

Rerun lilo.

This appeared today on http://freshmeat.net web:

imwheel 0.9.5

Imwheel makes the wheel of your Intellimouse (and other wheel mice) work in
Linux/X11 to scroll windows up and down, or send keys to programs. It runs
in the background as a daemon and requires little reconfiguration of the
XWindows setup. 4 or more button mice and Alps Glidepad 'Taps' may also be
used. Includes a modified gpm for an alternate method of wheel input.

I beg to differ: From the smbd man page
    (at http://uk.samba.org/samba/docs/man/smbd.8.html)

The server program itself should be executable by all, as users may
wish to run the server themselves (in which case it will of course run
with their privileges). The server should NOT be setuid.

This suggests to me that smbd (samba) should be capable of doing what
I believe the original questioner asked for - ie being runnable by normal
users. What is missing? (do I get the $500? Only joking... It should go to
the samba team, who have done, and continue to do such a great job!)

Happy Christmas!

I don't know afio, but dump/restore is much fater that tar on BSD
systems.
But an error during tar isn't always a problem. Some tars have a
ignore-error option. I remember 15 years ago a program called badtar
that processed tar files and ignored errors. The tar(5) format is
quite simple, and easy to write a program to parse....

Be careful, we have been reviewing the same for several days...E Series
definitely pose problems with SCSI BIOS marked as special that is not
working today. If you purchased an LH series recently like we did you may
have the same trouble. You may want to purchase your SCSI card over the
counter and not use HP's version of Adaptec BIOS. We haven't gone this way
yet because we really want the out of the box solution to work...or at least
try our best before giving up.

I'm old fashioned, but UUCP is made for this. USENET started on
UUCP-based networks 20 years ago, while only a few had TCP-networks.

It's a little funky to set up, because it has spooling, scheduled
connections, auto-dial, multiple phone numbers, etc.
In other words 100 times more than you really need.

Insist on an external modem and a fast serial port. It's almost
impossible to find an internal modem these days that is not encumbered
with Microsoft Plug And Play[tm]. If you're really lucky, your
BIOS will do everything right and Linux will be able to find your
internal Microsoft Plug And Play-equipped modem. In most cases,
the time you save not messing with that shit will pay the cost
difference many times over.

I could not test it with another OS but If I try to boot from a SCSI
device (I have no device attached to the SCSI bus) I think it works
because It skips to the next device to boot selected in the BIOS selection

I have a QDI SpeedEasy motherboard with TX chipset, when it boots the bios
displays the SCSI adapter will use IRQ11, and that is reported by the
driver, this IRQ is not being used by another device

Anyway I have no documentation of the SCSI adapter (I doesn't have any
brand, the chipmaker seems to be "Tolerant"), does there is a common
possible configuration for ncr810 based adapters?

My host adapter has 4 Jumpers:

J1 - two pins

JP 1 - two pins (cannot be closed)
JP 2 - three pins
JP 3 - three pins

I think my motherboard supports INTA..INTD, as I can change this settings
for the inboard IDE controller

Again, I do not know the brand of my ncr810 based SCSI adapter

I can say there are two logos in the board

Int the board: a logo with K1 characters

We're considering the following non-goliath companies to supply an
Intel-based Linux box. All of the companies I've looked at so far are
straight-forward about major component brands, pricing, and Linux
compatibility, but I have no idea what to expect for quality of assembly,
tech support, customer service, etc.

If anyone is willing to pass on favorable/unfavorable experiences for any
of the following companies (or any others...), it would be appreciated.

So far, the contenders are:

   1. VA Research
   2. Linux Hardware Solutions
   3. SW Technology

TIA,

To serve the SMB protocol, you must use ports 137 and 139. To do
this, you must have root privilege (or, for systems supporting
capabilities, have the bind-to-reserved-ports capability).
