I'd like to find out about which one of the available programs is best.
I've tried only one so far (WMtune, a Windowmaker dock app) and it
doesn't seem to tune very well.

Yes, the G200 will do a rock solid 1600x1200. I think my Hitachi 753
reports 75 Hz vertical refresh, and I'm sure I could do better.

I don't think your '/etc/isapnp.conf' is doing very much:

The only thing I can think to do is disable the PnP features of the modem
with the jumper and configure it normally. But, before i do that, here's
    what isapnp says:

    # isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf

    4155873961 [checksum 58]

(I also see that at boot time)

Here's my /etc/isapnp.conf...(I made it from pnpdump, and just deleted all
but the first "multiple choices" :

It's not setting BASE, IRQ or much of anything. So you need to un-comment
the lines above marked with ">>" if you expect much to happen. Below i've
included my personal '/etc/isapnp.conf' so you can see what a working one
looks like. It may not be minimal, but it is sufficient for a similar USR
modem. And yes, it does answer the phone and take messages, as well as
receives faxes. The 'vgetty' software is a bit primitive, but i was able
to make it work at least minimally.

I have an Accura v.90 (flashed as well) internal modem. I get as good or
even better throughput than my Win98 half using a script similar to that
above (assuming that net congestion isn't slowing things down...) But I
have gotten this modem to work well with my system (it's not in PnPray mode
btw).

You can also add this as an appended option (so you don't have to keep
retyping it). If you're using LILO, add the line

append = "mem=XXM" -(Where XX is the memory of your unit)

to the Linux portion in question of /etc/lilo.conf .

supported with the SVGA driver. Might just need the newer driver from

I just installed rh5.1 on a 17+ gig eide/udma/ide maxtor drive. The
objective is the creation of a cheap storage disk for large data files
to be served to win95 machines via samba. I used ez-drive since the
machine I'm using is old and does not support large drives. After
installing ez-drive I installed red hat and partitioned the disk as
usual for the install... with an added partition of about 14gigs for the
data called /data1. In RH the /data1 looks like it's the right size
(looking with the gui filesystem tool). However, when I mount the drive
on a windows machine, the drive appears to be 2 gigs. I use the default
smb.conf and uncomment the [public] section. Am I missing the obvious?
Is the only alternative 7 2-gig partitions? Is this a limitation of
Linux, samba, win95, NT file structures, what? Any help would be
appreciated.

Subject: advice needed for cheap, small, quiet system
Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 22:54:09 GMT

I'm looking for recommendations for a Linux system to be used as a lightly
loaded web server, mail server, DNS, and IP masquerading gateway.

Currently I'm running 2.0.36 (from Redhat 5.2) on a $400 generic 32MB,
200MHz K6 box which does the job fine, but takes up more space and makes
way more noise than I'd like.

I'd really like something similar in size to the Corel Computer Netwinder
series (see http://www.corelcomputer.com) except that they seem little
expensive for what you get and they seem a little too much on the bleeding
edge for my purposes right now (I'd prefer minimal headaches and not have
to recompile everything from scratch).

Any suggestions for an x86-based compact system which doesn't carry too
much of a premium price?

thanks,

So how's that ftp install going? Oh, I forgot you have been way too busy
posting BS to usenet all week, way too busy crying to actually figure anything
out on your own. Loser.

Could be the modems:
There are three "standards" for 56K modems; K-flex, X2
and V.90. V.90 is the endorsed standard, but K-flex and X2
have been around longer. Currently all K-flex and X2 modems
are being converted to V.90 (My ISP just upgraded last month).

Note that these three standards are not compatible. You may
be trying to connect with an incompatible 56K modem.
Best bet: Make sure that your new modem is V.90. Then
wait for your (ISP? [you didn't say what you were trying to
connect to]) upgrades it's modems.
