Thanks for the lead!! While I'd known that it was theoretically possible to run
SMP with the Mendicino cores, I lacked the gory details on where to drill, and
where to solder. That was like X-mas in march!

You will miss out on one of the bigger advantages, in that you don't have to pay
for Linux, vs. NT, but if you pay for NT, then so much for that advantage... In
my limited experiences, I've found Linux to run much faster, probably 'cause
it's not bloated like the M$ product lines are. It's a new experience, and if
you aren't the least bit familiar with any Unix system, then you will have a
steep learning curve. (Having about 20 years of PC/DOS experience, I built my
first Linux box this weekend, and while my hardware works like a charm, I
literaly re-installed the OS, 'cause I couldn't figure out how to get to the
docs on the CD, and couldn't figure out how to get out of vi :-))

To add to that, I don't know when/how soon you will want to do this, but I think
Red Hat will go to 6.0 for their next release, and by then, they will most
certainly include Xfree version 3.3.3.1 or better, and the 2.2 kernel will
probably be in the next release from them too. If you go with 5.2, you will
probably need to do at least the Xfree update yourself, and may wish to do the
2.2 kernel update too. SUSE 6.0 (I think) includes the Xfree 3.3.3.1, but I
don't think any of the major distributions include the 2.2.x kernels yet.

>
>> 2. How to modify Linux to allow for symmetric multiprocessing (SMP)?

Modify Linux for SMP? not necessary, just compile the kernel for it, as you
will undoubtably find you will want to compile a custom kernel anyway, just to
trim it down and fine tune it... By default, the install kernel includes support
for much hardware that you will probably not have, or intend to get.

Another performance tip would be to put the swap partitions of each OS on the
others drive, ie, the Linux swap partition on the NT drive, and whatever NT uses
for swap space on the linux drive -- this will give a very noticeable speed
increase, in drive access, and while the Maxtor drives are good solid drives,
they are no record setting speed demons. (I use several of them too)

Best all-around choice for general use sound card is still the Genuine
Soundblaster16. Most of the folks who have anything more than that aren't even
using the advanced features those other cards offer anyway, and the base SB16
has the broadest support across all platforms.

>> 6. I want to use my Nokia 445XPro to its full (2d) potential. Video cards?

I vaguely recall the 447 refering to a 17" monitor, and the 445 was a 15" model?
Just off the top of my head... If that is the case, and the Pro models offer
smaller dp + higher rez, (why anyone would want to use 1600 x 1200 on a 15"
screen is beyond me?)-- I got a used 21" NEC, and I'll never go back-- Matrox
Millenium (or II), or the Matrox Mystique work well. The newer G200 based cards
will work, but you will need to get an update for the Xserver to version 3.3.3.1
for that, and you may still need that update for something like the Diamond
Viper 550 (Riva TNT based). Red Hat even recomends that every one using RH 5.2,
which ships with Xserver version 3.3.2 get the update, as it is supposed to fix
some security bugs too. Either way, If you stick with Matrox, you will get
great 2d performance, and the manufacturer supports their products on many
platforms, and has for years.

I'm no software expert, 1rst place I'd look is the comercial howtos... with
that, I'll hand those off the rest of the group.

>> 9. Is the software that came with Maxtor's hard drives worth anything?

NNNNNNOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, that's not entirely true. If they came on
floppies, you can erase them and re-use them. :-) (thanks AOL, Compuserve,
Prodigy, and Genie... between all of you, I didn't need to buy floppies for

Yes you will need to upgrade to Xfree86 3.3.3.1, but I don't know the steps for
S.u.S.E., as I'm going through much the same thing, and I'm running Red Hat 5.2.

Hallelujah. I'll take every resource I can get. I think I've nearly got voting
stock in O'Reilly & Associates by now. I installed my first Linux system this
past weekend, and Hardware is great, but Unix experience is nil. I have the
Linux System administrators Guide, and Running Linux, though I thought they both
assumed a lot of basic unix command line knowlege, and I really need something
in hard copy, so I can read it when I CAN'T get the system to do what I want it
to do, like get out of vi, or change my rez in X, how to shut down properly,
etc... I literally rebooted and re-installed 3 times this weekend, because of
little things like not knowing how to escape out of vi or som man page I'd gone
to, and for once, I;d really like to have hard copy docs that were up too date,
so I could read them even when the system is down. I did run across an old copy
of "Linux Unleashed" published by Sams, and while it included an outdated copy
of slackware 2.2, it really does take one by the hand at start and tell them ALL
the keystrokes to gain their independence. I sure they print an updated
edition, just like I hopw there is an updated revision of running Linux, and the
admin guide, as I need to get up to speed on DHCP, and networking in a hurry,
but neither of those books even lists it in the index.

I bought a Phoebe CMV1456VQE external modem ($89) after finally
giving up on using my PCI modem. I have had a lot of trouble
getting ATD to find a dial tone and actually dial out. Using
the default it refuses. I discovered by accident that if I pick
up the phone while it is deciding whether to dial out it apparently
works. The line takes several seconds to clear before a dial tone
is audible even using the phone. I found the following trick
works.

AT H1
ATD {number}

That is the actual sequence I need to type. ATH1 tells the modem
that the phone is ready to dial. I wait complements of my slow
touch typing then I manually dial. I would like to know if I can
hard code a CR in the dial prefix and force this behavior? Even
better is there some simple hardware problem I should address. I
think this is what Windoze Hyperterminal means by wait for dial
tone, but there is no option for this in minicom. I know apologies
for mentioning an Windoze product. ;)

Hello. This may be needlessly picky, but most standard installs of mice put
them on com1, and the modem on com2. Try moving your mouse to com 1, and
disabling your com 2 in the CMOS settings, so that port address will be
available for the modem to grab. Then the sound card can go to it's normal
defaults of IRQ5, and IRQ 7 is still available for a later printer addition if
needed. Check your CMOS settings if you do this, and make sure that whichever
COM port your mouse is on is enabled, and unless you really need 3 serial ports,
that the other standard port is disabled.

Who has ISDN and the 2.2.x kernel up and running????????

could you please tell me how you did this....
I have 2.0.36 and all works fine....

I read that if you wanted to use isdn and 2.2.x you needed to apply some
patches to the 2.2.x kernel....i downloaded the isdn4l-3.0-beta2 but i
can't seem to find the patches.....
so i thought right, i can compile the i4l 3.0-beta2 but no i can't....

please help......

thnx in advance!

hello and thanks for your time... i have:
. RedHat 5.2 Deluxe
. Apache's latest WWW download
. Dual PII machine (speedy and roomy)
. 512k DSL connex from USWest
. 5 Static IPs
. Cisco 675 modem/bridge
. the will to learn more

i already own two domains (hosted on other servers) and i want to be
able to host them on my own machine. i will need www/ftp/email
services. i build whitebox PCs for side-cash, so i know my hardware
(and Windoze products) very well. what i don't know is the connectivity
part of the equation. from what i gather, USWest says i can do all this
with what i have, but they don't offer any support for this. i know a
little about TCP/IP, but even less about Linux. anyone know of any good
resources i can get started on? anyone willing to entertain an email
dialouge on this? many people have told me to use NT for this, but i
really want to use Linux... please help?

searching,
pcmiller

The process should be nearly identical for SuSE 5.3 as it is for RH 5.2,
with one major exception: SuSE 5.3 is still libc5 based, not glibc, so
you have to make sure you get the correct rpms (or tar.gz's, if you're
going that route)
