I love your answer! Why? Because I just yesterday order that card from
www.pcbroker! Matrox Millennium G200 with 8MB SGRAM - 250mHz RAMDAC, $101.
Does anybody know a good price for the additional 8MB module?

You might try blind dialing using ATX3 (the Hayes command). Maybe the
modem doesn't like your dial tone, in which case ATX3 will tell the modem
to ignore it and dial anyway.

Good luck!

Justin,

Go to the 3Com website (www.3com.com) and download the 3c509 disk #3
for DOS/Win95. Then boot your computer to DOS or Win95 DOS. Insert
Disk #3 and run 3c5x9cfg.exe and there is an auto-configure option.
This should detect the conflict and move both the IO Address and IRQ
to a non-conflicting setting. You should note your new IO and IRQ's
and then boot back to Linux and you "hopefully" will be good to go.
Also, if you are coming from Windows, you must run the 3cPnpDsbl.exe
(something like that) on that same disk to disable Plug-and-play mode
for this card - which is its default mode I believe. I think the PnP
disable can also be run from the 3c5x9cfg.exe file as well.

>From what I have found, this is the ONLY way to do it. 3com doesn't
have any utilities for Linux. I have found a link to someone that has
a program that can modify your card's EPROM but it is only for
advanced users and I don't recommend it if you can live with above
option. Write me back at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you have any
questions.

Good luck, I hope this helps you out!

You have a class C IP address. This means that the eth dev address will end
in a #1, just like you have indicated. The appropriate netmask for you would
be 255.255.255.0. Hope that helps. The rest of the story to get the .2-.5
range is in the DHCP-How to in any Linux install. Look at subnet masks.

Subject: Problems with 3c509B in RedHat
Date: Thu, 04 Mar 1999 01:12:03 GMT

I am having a problem with my NIC 3c509B. I am practically an expert
at this card after trying so many different settings and running all
of the 3Com utilities (cfg and pnpDsbl) on Disk #3 of the 3-disk
driver set for Win95/DOS.

My NIC worked fine under Windows95. I disabled PNP, ran the configure
program because it wasn't working under RH5.2 after many different
setting attemps and it came back and changed the IO and IRQ's as if it
had found a conflict. I practically started celebrating at that
point. Well, I booted back to RH and in my boot, I always get the
same message: Delaying Eth0 Init... I look at my configs and they all
look fine. Here is what I have sent to RH Tech Support but they have
been very slow in turning around any help...they have done nothing but
request files and settings from me for 2 weeks now with no suggestions
of what to try.

alias eth0 3c509

The above information appears to match up with the DOS config's new IO
and IRQ settings as it had reset them.

Also, this might mean something or not:

I have set up the eth0 card
via X-Windows Network Configuration but when I attempt to Activate
it...and it says Active but I don't see any signs of activity on my
hub and when I say "SAVE" and then quit and come back into the same
screen again, it always says Inactive again.

Can someone recommend something for me to try or someone to call or
somewhere to look for more help? I have read all of the How-To's,
Mini How-To's and so on but just can't seem to get this card to see my
network.

RH did sound disapointed with my ifconfig file not showing eth0 but
only lo. I don't understand why eth0 isn't showing up there...can
someone please help me.

you could also use Xconfigurator and if you know that you are never going to
use 8bit go ahead and remove it from the resolution options so that the one
that it boots to is 16bit
this will also eliminate the fustrations of typing "startx --bpp 16"
everytime you want to go into windows.

Try this

startx -bpp 16

Just make sure you got everything configured OK. Or just run xf86config
or Xconfigurator (in RedHat) and there will be a point where you can
choose which resolutions and color depths to use.

Hey guys, I thought I'd run this one through the group and see if anyone
had any ideas. I've got this old Compaq portable which I believe to be an
8088 (but it could be a 286). Anyway, my question is what micro
distribution to put on it. I've checked out LOAF, Tom's, muLinux,
DOSLinux, etc, etc. They all seem to require a 386 w/ 4MB RAM.
I've got a 20 MB Hard Drive to work with, so it doesn't _necessarily_ have
to fit on a floppy, but the micro-distributions seem to have the least
stringent system requirements.

Anyone have any ideas on a compatible release?

Subject: I successfully Installed mandrake Linux 5.3 on my emachines 300k

I have an emachines 300k etower and I installed Mandrake Linux 5.3 on it (2.1
gigs, 32MB memory, 17 inch Viewsonic E771 monitor) and the installation from
the CD went 100% smoothly, no problems at all. Now I have linux on this
etower 300k but Xserver video isnt in the resolution that I want it in, how
do I change it. The video setup that the installer set up for xserver was
incorrect for this monitor+video so I used Xconfigure --kickstart and X
-probeonly commands and successfully got Xserver (KDE) running in low-res
640x480 mode in 4bits (this is awful). i want to change the res to 1024x768
at 87Hz but I dont know how (only using Linux onthis etower for 1 week).
Please help me out. Im doing lots of man page reading and have tried tons of
settings and graphics cards driver but the best I could do was in the
1024x768 16 bit resolution but my monitor was flickering like crazy because
it wasnt at the proper frequency. I new to linux (only about 4 weeks and
Linux runs Fast (better than W98) on this $499, or is it $399 box). If you
want to set up a linux server I definately would reccomend this machine, you
xcant beat the price. I just hope the internal modem isnt a winmodem. Anyone
know if itsa winmodem insode this box? (AMD K6-2 300Mhz/32megs/2.1gigs)
Xserver is properly working in 640 in 480 mode and I plan to leave this linux

crashing.

2 thumbs up!

Kingston NE2000 clone ISA @ 0x320 / 4 (using ne.o)
UART 0 is disabled in BIOS

conf.modules looks like this -
alias eth0 3c509
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x320 irq=4 ----------->added by me per advice

3c509 goes into hub 1 connected to a cable modem
ne goes to hub 2 connected to the LAN.

There is also a Linux/W98 box on hub 1 on a separate IP address.

The 3com was found and correctly configured during the initial install.
It was used and worked well.
I added the 'options' line for the ne in conf.modules myself.
ifconfig confirms that both are now starting, all settings correct

The Problem -
Nothing is happening. No transfer, no receive. They light up the hubs, but
not the action lights. Pinging to and from the box doesn't work. Pinging
localhost and local IP addresses does work.

The firewall is off. ftp and telnet are the only things running, other than
loggers, which show nothing.

I start only one at a time, no dice. I am at a total loss.

So I could use some help for sure..
