work under linux? I am running 2.0.34 and it's not working right. I

I think you need the latest version of XFree86 -- at least 3.3.3-x
This cured the conflict I had between my Viper330 and my PCI SCSI card

Hi!
I am (still) having problems setting up and running X. I think i followed
the relnotes instructions that come with new X 3.3.3.1 correctly but still
have XF86Setup and X say it can't find something. Here is how I installed
it. I all went smooth without giving me any errors.
I have Riva TNT card and slackware 3.6

mkdir /home/X11R6
ln -s /home/X11R6 /usr

cd /usr/X11R6
sh /var/tmp/preinst.sh

chmod 755 extract

cd /usr/X11R6
/var/tmp/extract /var/tmp/X*.tgz

cd /usr/X11R6
sh /var/tmp/postinst.sh

these are the errors i am getting:

Kabal:~# XF86Setup
Couldn't determine where u have XFree86 installed. If u have XFree86
properly installed, set the XWINHOME environment variable to point to the
parent directory of the XFree86 bin directory.

and this is what i get when i try to start up X

Well, I don't think this is a common problem.

I am running Linux on a notebook computer. Hardly a server or
workstation. It doesn't spend a lot of time on desktops though. I
play from the comfort of my bed.

I think Linux is ready for the desktop. It is time to expose ordinary
users to it and see how they really fair. It does need to be
preconfigured, of course.

My ES1370 (AudioPCI) shares an interrupt with my PCI video card (Diamond
V330) and when I try to load up X with either the support built into the
kernel or through loading modules, the entire system freezes up. My BIOS
does not allow me to manually go in and give each PCI device a separate
IRQ - they are all on IRQ 10. Any idea of a work-around for this
situation (besides purchasing a new computer)? My hardware is as follows:

Gateway PPro 200
Ensoniq AudioPCI (ES1370)
Diamond Viper 330 (PCI)
Guillemont VoodooII (don't have any support loaded for this)
Zoom 56Ki modem (isa)
Iomega ZipZoom SCSI adapter (do have it installed)

Think that's about it. I'm running Caldera's OpenLinux 1.3, but I just
upgraded to the 2.2.3 kernal (with the HackPack on Caldera's ftp site).

Thanks,

Ken

I'd probably use linux myself if it weren't for a few things that
still make it impossible to switch. Maybe once corel gets their distro
out I'll think about it. Here's a perfect example of why I can't/won't
use linux:

Problem: I want to change my resolution.

Win9x/NT:
Right click on desktop - properties - settlings - done

Linux:
Edit config files and god know's what else

Why does everything have to be so inconvenient? I don't even care if
you can get a program to let you do this, it HAS to come built in,
ready to go, I don't want someone telling me I can download
whateverdalskjflsa;djfla;sjdfl;.rpm or download the source and compile
it. I just want it as simple as win9x/nt, end of story.

KDE is neat but it doesn't hide away the unix roots of linux, you
still can not escape it.

Hi,

I,ve got a Micropoint Iliission with the pcmcia-cs-3.0.8 module combined
with 2.2.3 Linux Kernel. Starting PCMCIA freezes the machine.

probe -m shows an i82365 like pcmcia chipset in my machine. Still, loading
the modules by hand shows that all other related modules don't cause a
crash, but the i82365 does

When i relay the output to logfiles it only shows the module going in for a
restart... and then it stops.

 How to debug this?

Anyone has a clue how to handle this.?

Hi,

I'm using a HP C1533A SCSI DAT tape here at home.

IMHO I think, that any SCSI tape runs with Linux.
since I haven't found Linux related information about the
C1528J at HP, SuSE/hardware database or other web sources:
does anyone use it? are there problems?

further this server will have 6 IBM DCAS-34330W for an OFA

do I need special cooling? does an AHA-2940UW treat this well?

Hans,
I recently installed RH5.2 on a PC with the SiS5598 on the motherboard,
but can't even get generic VGA to work. Just get lines on the screen.
I'm new to Linux, but found out about the config file and edited that,
tried all sorts of things, but the closest I got to seeing anything was when
I went down to 320x200 mode and was able to vaguely see a mouse pointer,
at four places on the screen.
I have all the monitor specs (it's a cheap SVGA 14inch).
I decided that I had to get XFree 3.3.3.1, but now I wonder what is really
wrong, as you were able to get generic VGA to work ...
Maybe I'll just go and buy a video card, but that's a cop-out.

Barry Kauler
