I need a webcam that will work under Linux. I am interested in the C-it
webcam by Xirlink which is a USB camera, but I've heard that unix doesnt yet
support USB,is this true? Which webcamera Can I use to broadcast live video
over the internet in Linux (for CuSeeMe,my webpage, ect.)? Please be specific
on the namebrand and whether its a PCI, serial port or pci camera. What about
the Big Picture 3com camera? Please recommend me. I've checked the redhat
compatibility list but they didnt mention webcams. Im using Mandrake Linux
5.3 (aka RedHat linux 5.2). Thank you.

Hi everyone,

I have installed RedHat 5.2 according to the book, and now I want to upgrade
to XFree 3.3.3.1. I downloaded and installed the following RPMs:

XFree86-3.3.3.1
XFree86-SVGA
XFree86-VGA16
XFree86-libs
XFree86-XF86Setup
XFree86-75dpi-fonts

When I select my STB nVidia card and hit OK in Xconfigurator, I get a
segmentation fault. Is the problem that I'm using Xconfigurator? Do I need
to be using XF86Setup instead? And if not, are there any other packages
that I need before I can configure XFree86 3.3.3.1?

Thanks,

Eric Brown

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a fast machine for scientific calculation pourposes.
For some constraints I'm looking to an Intel platform, so I cannot go
Alpha.

The idea is to buy a dual pentium II machine ( Dell Workstaion series
210 ).

The problem is this: will Linux support this machine?

What matherboard chipset/BIOS is supported for SMP?

Is there any standard for SMP motherboards?

Any information about SMP motherboards/BIOSes is welcome.

Thanks very much.

I think *performace* is the key to the "farms" as opposed to
"price/performace ratio"... when you're looking at large clusters &
farms, you want each individual processing node to have good
performance... As I mentioned in a previous post, low-end Alphas are
competing agains high-end Intel...if you want individual node
performance *better* than the low-end Alpha, then forget about Intel...
particularly when your dual cpu 21264 systems have a SpecFP95 value
pushing a factor of 10 greater than the top dual cpu Intel system...

I have an old Pc with what identifies itself as an "AHA-1530P/1532P" SCSI
controller.

Is there a Linux driver for this controller? Redhat's install disks only have
support for the 152x and 1542 controllers.

Thanks,

Um, a T1 is only 1.544Mbps, that's 193kbytes/sec minus overhead.

I just set up a 486DX2/66 clunker and networked it to my fast machine via
a couple of NE2000 clone "old ISA NICs." FTP transfers run at 660kbytes/sec.

I've got a Creative Labs Graphics Blaster TNT, and also had Xconfigurator core
dump on me after upgrading to 3.3.3.1. I played around and discovered that I
could produce a skeleton XF86Config with the older xf86config program. After
some cutting and pasting of monitor information, I was back in business. I've
done a lot of XF86Config tweaking in the past, so your mileage may vary.

Our products are the development systems for such applications. So far, I haven't
seen a vanilla PC used for a safety-critical application itself, though there are some
customers getting pretty close with things like PC 104 boards do moderate-criticality
things. We do have customers using 32-bit x86 processors in custom board
configurations for high-criticality applications.

As far as the crashing issue, in a development environment it's generally not that big
an issue. I've experienced very few of these under NT4 and the NT 5 ("win 2000")
betas, never with impacts on data. When I say very few, I mean on the order of three
times over a period of 9-12 months, if that many.

That's what I'm using... a CL Graphics Blaster TNT. It works, but you
need to update XFree86 to 3.3.3. Red Hat 5.25 ships with XFree86 3.3.2.
If you go to the www.redhat.com you can find the updates.

If you're planning on running KDE as your desktop manager; might I suggest
trying Linux Mandrake. It's basically Red Hat 5.2 with KDE 1.1
installed. Mandrake comes with XFree86 3.3.3.1 so you will be up and
running without having to do any updates. I found Mandrake easy to
install and setup (it was just as easy as RH5.2); I grabbed the .iso
cd-rom image off of the Mandrake site and burnt my own cd-rom to install.

Here's suggestion for installing if you get Mandrake --- when you go to
install, select expert install - I noticed that if you don't select expert
install, when you start KDE you don't have the non-KDE X-applications
listed in their startup menu.

Hey all...
I have come to the conclusion that even with all the wonderful
work from the Linux community out there, that I feel more need to be
done. I would like to know what kind of movement, or feeling there is
out there to force manufactures to build suport for linux. I recently
migrated to Linux and have everything working execpt my color scanner a
Plustek 9636t. I know I should have bought a SCSI based scanner and I
wouldn't even be bothering anyone. I have an HP 3p that I use for
grayscale, but occasionaly I need to and some color. What can I say the
Plustek was on sale and had a rebate. Yes I am a cheap bastard! But
doesen't Plustak have an obligation to ALL it's customers. Even the so
called Linux Masochists that refuse to ASSimilate! Should I be upset
that their website doesn't even mention Linux? Or should I just lick my
wounds and go buy an HP scanner? Well I sent then this earlier
today.........

Subject: Epson LX850 9-pin problems

Hi All,

I've been plagued on and off for quite some time now by a "niggly" printing
problem. I own a dinosaur Epson LX850, big, old, noisy and all of that. However
it suits my needs perfectly. With RH 4.2 I had no problems whatsoever, but with
RH5.0 the problems started. Luckily 5.0 was superseded by 5.1, and the printing
problem was solved. Now with 5.2, the problem came back! Here's the symptoms:
The Epson printer prints normal ASCII excellently when the printer is set up
using the "text-only" filter. With the Epson 9-pin drivers (all of them!), I can
only print about two thirds of the way accross the paper, and as a result
printing any Postscript files are out of the question. Has anybody experienced
a similar problem with the Epson printers, and if you had and managed to solve
the problem, please can you tell me how you did it? I really don't print enough
documents to warrant forking out for a new printer, but in the end I suppose it
will have to happen. In the mean time, however, I would still like to use my
trusty old "wreck"! ;-)

Thanks a million in advance!

Subject: Ide floppy and QDI mother board

I have just installed two machines, both with an IDE Iomega Zip drive.

The first machine has an ASUS mother board and everything works fine.

The second machine has a QDI P6I440BX/B1S mother board.
On this machine the ide driver identifies the Zip drive at boot time but
reports a strange message about the capacity of the drive:
========================================================================
ide: i82371 PIIX (Triton) on PCI bus 0 function 57
    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007

hdb: The drive reports both 100663296 and 100646912 bytes as its
capacity
========================================================================

Then, when I try to read the partition table of a fresh disk (one
partition hdb4) using fdisk, the latter does not find any partition
despite the one which does reside on the disk:
========================================================================
# fdisk /dev/hdb

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/hdb: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 96 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

Command (m for help):
========================================================================

However, if I create a new partition and mke2fs it, I can then mount it
and use it. The problem is that I have a bunch of Zip disks containing
data which I certainly don't want to reformat...

I tried to set up the drive as a master on the secondary ide interface
(/dev/hdc) but it did not lead to any better result.

Thanks in advance for any help.

hi!

I am trying to get an Iomega Zip 250 parallel port drive working on a
Redhat 5.2 linux system.

I followed the instructions in the Zip-Drive Howto. I got the imm
driver, compiled the kernel with support for SCSI, SCSI disk and
modular lp support.

When I try to insmod imm, it only outputs (from /var/log/messages)
=========================
Mar 14 01:27:57 loon kernel: imm: Version 0.18
Mar 14 01:27:57 loon kernel: imm: Probing port 03bc

Mar 14 01:27:57 loon kernel: scsi0 : Iomega ZIP Plus drive
Mar 14 01:27:57 loon kernel: scsi : 1 host.
=========================

It detected the drive but it's not available as any device. I tried to
mount /dev/sda* (each of them, separately). But i get error message that
it does not correspond to a block device and the reason may be that the
driver is not loaded.

According to the Howto, insmod imm should also output to which device
file (sda0 -- sda4) the drive is mapped. But in my case, it does not tell me
the device name.

My kernel version is 2.0.36.

I tried running insmod imm from /etc/rc.d/rc.local which is executed
after all the rc scripts. I also tried insmod imm by stopping lpd daemon.
It didn't make any difference.

I have seen postings on this group saying they got Zip 250 working perfectly
in linux. I will greatly appreciate any help in this regard.

I <finally> got RAID working on my machine. Upgraded to 2.2.3 kernel,
applied a patch, got latest raidtools and voila`!

I struggled terribly until yesterday. Now it works like a charm. I've
three 6.5Gb disks, split into 6Gb RAID-5, and 9Gb RAID-0 with a thin
slice of striped swap down the middle. (Kernel stripes swap with equal
priority.)

Tremendous kudos to the RAID crew for making the process so simple (once
I figured what I needed).

If needed, I can pass along some information regarding what I did.

I think you need:

XFree86-VGA16-3.3.3.1-1
XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.3.1-1
XFree86-libs-3.3.3.1-1
XFree86-SVGA-3.3.3.1-1
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.3.1-1

Subject: 3c509 ISA

In the process of configuring my sound card, I had to run pnpdump >
/etc/isapnp.conf and modify it for the correct settings for my sound cound. I
also had a listing for my 3c509 Ethernet(which is ISA), for which there was no
"Multiple choice", only one of each type of argument in isapnp.conf.

This is where the "But" comes in. But...

When i rebooted, I got an error message about the LD settings. dmesg didn't
catch the error message, but the gist of it was it said it couldn't verify ld4
but that it may not be aproblem, try running (verifyld n), the line# of the
error in /etc/isapnp.conf was in the 3c509 section.

Then later in the bootup, i get the message:

IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc.
Appletalk 0.17 for Linux NET3.035
eth0: 3c509 at 0x300 tag 1, 10baseT port, address 00 a0 24 bf f5 ec, IRQ 10.
3c509.c:1.16 2/3/98 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
eth0: Setting Rx mode to 1 addresses.

Any ideas? I"m thinking maybe I don't need the section in isapnp.conf, since
its being picked up somewhere else.

Date: 19 Mar 1999 07:44:04 GMT

I have built a computer for linux and had a question about the Cyrix 233
processor and Redhat 5.2. Now, I have purchased Redhat 5.1 long ago and it
installes just fine with the Cyrix, but version 5.2 will not run giving me
many GPFs during install. I have installed without any problems but then
there are strange errors when booting up.

if there is anyone out there that is using Cyrix and has any answers for
me I would appreciate it. I am running redhat 5.1 just fine with no probs.,
just wondering what is up with the newest version?

You didn't say it, but from what I have just gone through, you have one
of those nasty TLAN chips. I went through hell getting it working, but it
works now, damnit. :-) FYI- The Caldera driver on the boot disks does not
work for an FTP install. It is just there to tease us poor Compaq owners.

First, skip networking and get Red Hat up and running. Then from a
command line, do an "insmod tlan duplex=2" and run netconfig. You may have
to remove, and insert it again to get it to work right, and you may not...
If you are feeling alone and persecuted, do a dejanews search on the keyword
"tlan" in the c.o.l.networking group. :-)

Hardly. Things don't suddenly break. You just have to
be mindfull of the changes that are going to occur to
        your system.
