I went through the exact same thing with i810 I and
another guy on another newsgroup had bad experiences
with the Macmillian "flavor" of the kernel. I have recently
installed Mandrake 7.0 from the current issue of Maximum
linux and it worked like a charm, so beware of the Macmillian
version. So a nonstandard "patch" can make agpgart rebuild
throw up on a 2.2 kernel.

There's patch for the onboard ncr710 (included in the 2.2.14)

http://www.sleepie.demon.co.uk/ncr53c710/

Any chance that somone tell me how to have a network
card work on this machine?
I posted few days ago asking how to make my EISA intel etherexpress hub (82596)
work...
I once succeeded in installing redhat 6.0 with an ISAne2k
but it no longer works, i just get lost interrupts!

The Celeron IIs aren't SMP-capable, but rumor has it Abit among others
are working on a dual-FC-PGA motherboard that would support the
highly-overclockable socketed coppermine chips, which would be about as
good. A P3/550E that can hit 733 runs in the neighborhood of $200, a
tad pricier than the Celerons, but would still be pretty inexpensive
given the performance of a ~1.5ghz system...

That better be more than just mere rumors, because Intel has decided,
due to their utmost wisdom, to drop all slot coppermine products in
the near future.

Last weekend I tried to install RH6.1 from SCSI-CDROM on my old 386 with
an Adaptec AHA-1542CF. During boot, I see the message 'SCSI host: 0'. On
the first install screen, it says 'insert driver disk'.
If I press cancel, it tries to load the SCSI module and then hangs. Now
what? I have no idea how to obtain a driver disk.
The Hardware-HowTo says my particular controller is supported, but still
it doesn't work. Just for reference I tried to install SUSE5.1, which
wants to install the controller with a default adress of 0x340. This of
course can't work because the highest possible base adress for the
AHA1542CF is 0x334 (jumper configurable).
What can I do?
Btw, the hardware works fine, I installed DOS and am able to access both
the HD and CD drive.

IIRC, there is a utility called something like movepci.exe that

Hi--

To those who followed this thread of about 7 weeks ago, I did eventually
solve the problem but was indisposed for a while and did not get a chance
to follow up. The solution was the combination of

1) using IRQtune (available at freshmeat, I believe) to raise the priority
of my serial port
2) using the command /sbin/hdparm -u1 /dev/hda

I now maintain download speeds actually slightly in excess of what I
achieved under Windows.  Thanks to all of you who helped in the diagnosis;
I greatly appreciate your efforts and consideration.

Yes, it works.
Linux does not care about the type of processor.
The only thing you need to do is to select the MTRRs when compiling a
new kernel. Since you should do this with an Intel PCU too, it is no
difference.

I have a Athlon 700 on a board from Epox with the VIA KX-133 chipset,
and it works fine and fast.

Xfree86 3.3.6 supports the Rage128 line of cards, including the Xpert128.
However, the 2D support in XFree86 4.0 is much better, and if your card is
agp there is now a beta of the DRI available for 3D support for the card
(with PCI support coming soon).

I have had the same problems with Samba, and I think it depends on security
problems. I solved it by changing the permissions on the directory
/var/spool/lp on the machine that is connected to the printer. I changed it to
777, and it worked. It may not be a very good idea if there are untrusted users
on the network, but I don't know any other way to solve it. Your config is a
bit different from mine, so you may change the rights on the directory
/var/spool/samba and /var/spool/samba/deskjet instead for on /var/spool/lp.
