It should work just fine, it's just an aic7856 on a cheap board. Are you
using the "aic7xxx" driver? (If you have gotten that far, what sort of
error messages are you seeing?) You won't be able to boot from it, however.

For more info and to rate this product (or add your workaround about) this
product, go to the Linux Hardware Database at

Hi!

Does anybody have this modem working under Linux?

I think to buy one but Motorola support canot decide
whether it will or nto work under Linux.

At 1-800-4-A-PCMCIA I was told it will work.
Through e-mail I was informed that it needs point
enabler under DOS so it probably won't under Linux.

Could anybody help me with that?

I've used the older generation of Matrox (Millenium-II) in my old machine and
currently use a Diamond Viper 550 (TNT-1) in my new machine at 1600x1200 32-bit
colors at 82Hz on a Nokia 446Xpro monitor. Note, both cards were PCI (the old
system was a Pentium Pro which predated AGP, and the new system uses an Intel
server motherboard which doesn't have an AGP slot). Both work flawlessly under
Linux. I should note that the VESA mode support in the kernel seemed to print
black on black on my Tnt card starting with 2.2.6. The standard vga modes that
don't use VESA framebuffer work fine.

You probably want to avoid the newer G400 or TNT-2 at this point, since those
chips came out after the last set of X drivers, and might not be supported
yet.

Subject: Differences between HP SureStore DAT 8e and 8eU
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 16:19:23 -0700

I want to purchase an HP DAT drive.
I've looked at the HP Surestore Dat 8e and 8eU
and I cannot figure what is the difference between
them. The 8eU is supposed to be for UNIX and 8e for
PC. But what if I want to use it with both Windoze
and Linux? What does "for UNIX" mean?

I am assuming the 8eU gives you some UNIX config
info and maybe some software. But it also appears
the power cabling for the 8eU is different? I think
the 8eU may have an external "power brick" while the 8e
does not. Question is why? They are both external
SCSI devices so why would the power cabling be
different? You should be able to use the 8e with
UNIX just as well?

If anyone has one of these drives please give me
some feedback. Currently I am assuming I can buy
an 8e version and just use it with Linux.

This is correct and what I had to do.

Not really. You are telling the IDE device driver that the hda device
is a ide-scsi type device. I think your whole problem though is that
your kernel wasn't compiled to include ide-scsi. If its a module then
it won't work properly since at the bootup time, the kernel won't be
automatically loading modules from your harddrive yet.

I think you need to build your own kernel and include the ide-scsi
support directly in the kernel. This is how I've got the same CD-RW
set up and I had no problems - just worked the first time!

Yes it is though if you are in X-Windows you can use "make xconfig" to
have a nicer interface. Also in text mode I would use "make menuconfig"
which is better than the old "make config" mode.

> * My cdrom needs to be configured primary master. Is this true?

No it doesn't have to be primary master. I've got four IDE device in
my system (2 HD, 1 CD-ROM, 1 CD-RW) and the HP 8100 is hdd (secondary
slave).

Because when you booted the "hda=ide-scsi" had no effect since you
don't have it compiled into your kernel and available at that point.

Yes I think so.

It couldn't be loaded at boot up since the kerneld process which
auto-loads modules isn't even running yet.

Your assumptions aren't quite correct.

> * What is the line 'append="hda=ide-scsi"' actually telling lilo to do.

Its an options to the IDE device driver telling it the hda is a special
case.

> * How do I confirm that I have the "ide-scsi" driver.

On boot up you need to be seeing the message like this:

ide_setup: hdd=ide-scsi
hdd: Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer Plus 8100, ATAPI drive - enabling SCSI
emulation

If you are not, its not going to work!

I sent mail about this previously trying to help. Did you receive
it?

Subject: SCSI Problem

Hi,

I have got the Diamond Fireport 40 PCI SCSI-Controller in my System and
I have installed Suse Linux 6.1. with Kernel v2.2.4. During the
Installation I have chosen Modul "NCR53c8xx" for my SCSI-Controller (I
didn't need any parameters). The Controller was found. After finishing
the installation I try to boot my system, but it stops with kernel
panic:
"VFS: Cannot open root device"
"Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to open root fs"
It says that no SCSI-Host was found.
No I boot from CD and start the modul from the installation routine
again. It works. The I start an existing installation and want to create

a new kernel.
Menuconfig:
SCSI low-level drives:
I can choose NCR53c7,8xx or NCR53c8xx. No matter which I choose, the
same Kernel Panic appears.

Can anybody help me please.
Thanx in advance

The IBM PRxxx processors are rated as performing the same speed as a Pentium
xxx. Tht is to say they will execute a program in the same amount of time.
However the clock speed used by the PR chips is somewhat less than the PR
figure. The PR200 actually runs at 166MHz and as you point out the PR300
runs at 233MHz.

Sounds strange. Are you attaching the modem to one of the regular
COM1/2 ports or to extra serial ports?

I've always just used "AT&F1" as the best setup. I'm using a 56K
external data/fax Sportster right now and get good 2-3kb/sec download
speeds.

No I don't think so! I've heard lots of problems with internal PCI
modems and Linux. I think part of the problem is that some of them
are WinModems so only work with Windows. Also I personally don't care
for internal modems (you can't easily look at the lights to see what
is happening and with an external you can just turn it off and on to
reset it whereas you've got to reboot your computer with an internal!).

Your Sportster should work fine so there is something else wrong. If
you can try dialing into a site using minicom and just see if doing
that is slow. If so it could be that your Sportster is on a serial
port with the wrong IRQ set up which makes Linux *really* slow at
accessing the port.

Subject: G200 or TNT? (damn, I hate asking questions like this)
Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 03:23:50 GMT

Ok, I have this old system onto which I'm going to load Redhat 6.0 as
a learning experiment. Problem is that it's video is an old 2M S3 864
card that appears to only be capable of 1024x768 under X. With the new
19" monitor I just received, that seems a bit of a shame SO.........

For a PCI only system, I'm looking for a relatively cheap (~<$100)
card that'd be fast with a good high quality 2D picture at high
resolutions (1280x1024 and 1600x1200). Not knowing Linux, I think
either a Matrox G200 or something based on a TNT chipset possibly? Any
personal experience/suggestions out there?

TIA,

It does suffer somewhat for a 100' run, to the point where I'm not using it
anymore (monitor in bedroom, computers in basement). For the 100' run, I had
to lower the resolution from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024, and it was still somewhat
noticeable (but usable). For shorter runs using a 10' or 25' cable, I could
run at 1600x1200, but there was still degradation.
