Apparently, Phoenix and Award do BIOSes with support for a serial-line
console instead of a VGA framebuffer. Does anybody know which, if any,
currently-shipping 440BX motherboards (preferably single-processor)
come with one of these BIOSes?

Thanks in advance...

Winrover...the name is so offensive I'd pass on it. I recently
bought a Fujitsu e340 from pcconnections.com for ~$1600 and am
very happy with it.

I don't know what the Vibra 16 C is like, but the Vibra 16 X (Waveffects)
card has two 8-bit DMA channels instead of one 8-bit and one 16-bit channels.
In Windoze, 16-bit sound is produced by two cycles through the 8-bit DMA
channel. This presents a problem in Linux since there's no native driver
to do this that I know of. However, I have gotten the card to work with
the latest versions of isapnptools and sndconfig in Red Hat 6.0. Go figure.
I at least feel a little better that I didn't thrown my money down the drain
when I mistakingly bought this card :-)

Subject: SCSI ZIP 100 Mount/Unmount Problems?
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 04:18:26 GMT

Hi,

I have managed to edit my /etc/fstab file to mount my ZIP 100
(external SCSI) ... which it does quite nicely on startup.

However, when I try to unmount it as user I get the message ...

umount: only root can unmount /dev/sda4 from mnt/zip

I can go into root and unmount it, but if I want to then mount it
again, I get ...

umount: only root can unmount /dev/sda4 from mnt/zip

once I go back to user.

I've tried everything I can think of in the way of settings that can
be changed, but I cannot figure exactly what I need to do to
mount/unmount from user.

Any suggestions? I'm sure its something blindingly obvious, but I've
only had Linux (Mandrake 6.0 Venus distribution) up and running for a
week, and I have no previous Linux or Unix experience (Apple II, Mac,
Amiga, Windows experience, yep ... Unix/Linux, no <sigh>)

Any help gratefully accepted!

Robert, thanks for the suggestion. I believe I already saw that

Ya think? Yes, you should have used thermal heatsink compound from the start.
Without it, the CPU can run as much as 10degree F hotter. Really does make a
difference in system reliability.

Sure. There are a couple of ways.

The simple way would be to connect a serial (null-modem) cable between
a serial port on the laptop and a serial port on Linux. Configure Linux
to start a getty against the serial port, and bring up a dumb-terminal
comms program (telix, etc. or the Windows dumb terminal pgm) to talk over
the laptop's serial port. You'd have a text-only dedicated 'dumb terminal' connection
but you could then login to Linux from there.

A slightly more difficult way that would greatly expand the administrative
capabilities of the laptop would be to connect a serial (null-modem) cable between
a serial port on the laptop and a serial port on Linux. Configure Linux
to start a ppp server against the serial port, and bring up DUN/Winsock to talk over
the laptop's serial port. You now have full PPP connectivity between Linux and
your laptop, and can use telnet, ftp, web-browser, etc. clients to administer
your Linux system.

Edit /etc/fstab and find the line that refers to /dev/sda4. There is
probably a bit on that line that says defaults. Change it so it says
'user, noauto'. The user option allows anyone to mount/unmount, and
the noauto ensures it does not attempt to mount it on bootup.

I couldn't get X-Windows to support this chipset either. I had hoped it
was supported in the SVGA server but never had any luck with it. I ended
up using the VESA Frame Buffer support in the Linux 2.2 kernels along
with the FBDev X Server. In order to get the card working properly as a
VESA 2.0 compatible card, I had to load the SiS VBE extensions prior
to loading Linux. This means that to load Linux I boot to a small DOS
partition which first loads this driver, then uses loadlin to launch the
Linux kernel.

Here's how I did it:

Requirements: A 2.2 Kernel
The SiS VESA BIOS Extensions TSR for DOS
using loadlin.exe as your Linux boot method

Recompile Kernel with VESA Framebuffer support - there is a Frame Buffer
mini-Howto somewhere that will help with this if you need it.

in /dev run 'MAKEDEV fb' to create the framebuffer device nodes.

Down SiSVBE.EXE from www.sis.com.tw

Make sure you're booting into a DOS or Windows partition.
Install loadlin, putting the loadlin executable, a linux.bat batch file, and
a copy or your kernel into a subdirectory on your DOS/Windows partition.

Your AUTOEXEC.BAT file should have the last two lines as:

sisvbe.exe <--- SiS VESA 2.0 extensions
c:\linux\linux.bat <--- loadlin installed in a linux directory

My linux.bat file looks like:
c:\Linux\loadlin c:\Linux\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 ro vga=0x303

the vga=0x303 boots my system into 800x600, 256 colors

When your system boots, MS-DOS/Windows should load, install the SiS VESA
extensions and then boot linux. Linux should boot in 800x600 mode, showing
a penguin icon at the top and use a 137x34 character display.

You now need to set up XFree86 to use the FBDev server. One of the things
I had to do was edit XF86Config, appending the following to the bottom:

Section "Screen"
        Driver "FBDev"
        Device "Generic VGA"
        Monitor "MyMonitor"
        SubSection "Display"
                Modes "default"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Note: I'm using a Debian distribution (Slink 2.1) and so can't comment
on any variances between my distribution and your Redhat 6.0 distribution.
I'm using the 2.2.10 Kernel.
For more frame buffer information read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/

Hope this helps..

These are files from 2.2.5, I think. They work with the newer kernels,
but are not needed anymore. There is now a new backend for the
Snapscan, version 0.7, that works with the newer sg.[hc].

Has anyone had success using a Diamond SupraExpress 56i v.90 with
Linux? I can dial into my ISP through minicom and log in manually,
starting the PPP session but I can't seem to get my pppd to connect

authentication, which complicates things) but I had heard some time ago
that some SupraExpress modems used shared memory for buffering data,
causing it to be incompatible with Linux. Is this true or am I barking
up the wrong tree?

everything seemed to install like it should. I've checked out the man page
(PCMCIA-howto) and it really doesn't tell you what to do after that (unless

but when i tried an 'lsmod' this is what I got:

Module Size Used by
nfs 29944 1 (autoclean)
nfsd 150936 8 (autoclean)
lockd 30856 1 (autoclean) [nfs nfsd]
sunrpc 52356 1 (autoclean) [nfs nfsd lock]

I also checked my /var/log/message file just for kicks to see if there was
anything in there that might help and I got the following (when i tried to
run cardmgr):

localhost cardmgr[1442]: no pcmcia driver in /proc/devices
localhost cardmgr[1442]: exiting
localhost cardmgr[1460]: starting, version is 3.0.13
localhost cardmgr[1460]: config error, file 'config' line 1326: syntax
error

I'm sure these are probably the result of my pcmcia drivers not being
completely installed. Can anyone tell me what to do after you do the
following (i've gotten the the make install and everything is fine up to
there:

     Unpack pcmcia-cs-3.0.?.tar.gz in /usr/src.
Run ``make config'' in the new pcmcia-cs-3.0.? directory.
Run ``make all'', then ``make install''.
Customize the startup script and the option files in /etc/pcmcia
for your site.

thanks in advance....

TC
