i am not exactly sure of the model. it was received in an
auction from an industrial plant and (as far as i can tell,
doesn't say the model).

but it does have AMI bios. it says:
        Amibios
        American Megatrends
        486DX ISA BIOS
        AB4283634

Linuxmeisters,

I am trying to use an Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus ethernet/modem
PCMCIA card in a laptop running SUSE 6.4. At the moment I am just
trying to get the modem to work. It almost works, but not quite. The
card is configured in /etc/pcmcia/config as follows:

card "Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus"
  version "Intel", "PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus", "MBLA3256", "1.03"
  bind "tulip_cb", "serial_cs"

/etc/pcmcia/serial.opts is as follows:

# Serial device configuration
#
# The address format is "scheme, socket, instance".
#
case "$ADDRESS" in
*,*,*)
    INFO="Default modem setup"
    # Symbolic link to dialout device
    LINK="/dev/modem"
    # Options for 'setserial'
    SERIAL_OPTS=""
    # Should we create an inittab entry for this port?
    #INITTAB="/sbin/mgetty"
    ;;
esac

The log files show the following:

Have the exact printer here and it won't even work hooked up to a jetdirect
box. It is a winprinter and needs to be hooked up to a windows box to
function. I just installed some print server software on the windows machine
to print to it via the linux machines.

Same thing happened to me and my P5MMA supermicro motherboard and
pentium mmx 166. This seems to be a known problem with the P5MMA and
the bios needs to be flashed with the latest version. Unfortunately, my
bios refuses to flash so my only recourse is to replace the bios chip.

After a lot of trouble getting fips to work too, I'm wondering if Linux
is worth it.

Well, i just got my USB-scanner to work. I have

In the kernel-configuration i also saw support for
USB keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, modems,
sound, and some more. Sounds like full USB-support

David,
You need to tell the card that your chip is backwards compatible
with the Rage 128 using the following line in your
XF86Config File:

ChipId 0x5246

Carl, Mike,
It seems that it's a pentium 90/120 based server series 320. You should be able
to install Linux RH61. But you perhaps will have to get some config purpose
floppys. It may also show a MCA bus instead of a PCI or ISA.
With the Type model number you may find more info on "www.pc.ibm.com".
Good luck,

Alain Garnier

Check http://www.linux-usb.org. The site seems to be flaky for me at the
moment, but it may have cleared up by the time you read this. The 2.3.x
kernels do include support for USB communications devices, but I've no
idea if the Alcatel works with that driver.

AFAIK, only one internal DSL modem works with Linux: The Diamond 1MM.
(I've got links to the driver on my web page, at
http://www.rodsbooks.com/network/network-dsl.html.)

As a general rule, I recommend getting external *Ethernet-interfaced* DSL
modems. These work with anything; you just need driver support for your
Ethernet card. (With some ISPs, you also need PPPoE support, but that
support exists in Linux and works with any hardware that's otherwise OK.)
If your ISP doesn't offer this option, ask them what models of external
modem work, and try to find one of those. eBay can be a good place to
look; there are often used DSL modems on sale there.

Hi,

I resently installed Redhat Linux v.6.1, and I'm facing some problems
regarding my video card (which is a Intel Cor. 810 Graphics Controller Hub).
Linux wont detect my card and thus xwindows wont start. When I try to start
X (startx), I get a couple of errormsg ... errno 2, errno 111 and errno 3.
It sais "Unable to connect to x server". When I try to configure through
Xconfigurator, nothing applies, whatever I choose (even Unlisted and SVGA)
it sais X server doesn't exist. (?) Then I tried to install Redhat v.5.2,
and I managed to get it working with SVGA (600x800). Upgraded to v.6.1,
still worked but I'm not satiesfied with such a low resolution and used
xf86config to alter it, and damn ... I'm back to where I started. With no
xwindows at all (well, I got VGA with 400x600 or something. Extremely
magnified :-( ) .... Linux just wont detect the damn thing. Unkonwn this and
Unknown that ... Any out here who can give a helping hand ????

I put together this linux box:
Abit BP6 dual Celeron 400MHz
64Mb RAM
Creative Labs Savage 4 (32Mb RAM)
EXTERNAL 56k modem
Tekram scsi card
2 internal IDE hard drives + cdrom drive
2 scsi drives in a separate case

The hard and cdrom drives, the scsi card and the modem came from an exisiting
setup, but in any case, disks are the easiest of parts to add...
It took me about half an hour to figure out how to open the midi-tower case, then
one hour to assemble the bits. Another half hour to figure the drive geometry
settings in the BIOS, then it was up and running. I expect a reseller would be
able to do all that in around 40 minutes.

I disagree... If I go to my local dealers in my neighbourhood of Paris (France,
not Tx), I can ask "is this going to work with Linux?" and the guy behind the
counter will be able to tell me! In fact, when I went out comparing the price of
twin-cpu mobos, several tried to ward me "you know, this won't work wiith
Windoze, unless you put NT on it?". When I replied "it's getting Linux", they
didn't say "what's that?"... they know already.

Well, what I'm getting at is, a newbie can get lost in all these "hardware
compatibility lists" that are mostly anecdotal (like the config I give above),
and dealers who know didly about Linux are going to lose Linux customer to those
that are clued up. There'll be two gangs: Windozers who can go to any dealer (and
get a giggle half the tine, but always get served), and Linux people who'll only
go to linux-savvy dealers.

As for getting help fro Micro$oft, of course you can get help... you just have to
pay (and pay, and pay) for it.

Go to the local university, higher education institute, and contact the Linux

Hi John, thanx a lot for your help!

Yes, the disk/bios options in lilo.conf solved the problem (fortunately in
your source distribution, there is more documentation than in the
rpm-package, which doesn't include the disk/ either).

Nevertheless I don't understand the reason. My new BIOS disk assignment is
hda=0x80, hdc=0x81, sda=0x82 while whitout hdc it's sda=0x81. So I would
guess LILO normally assumes the "other disk" (i.e. the one given by root=)
is alway 0x81 if it were not for the following:

1)
When booting from floppy, / was always found correctly on sda5 regardless of
the presence of hdc.

2)
Now I can remove hdc, and the system still works fine with unchanged LILO
(i.e. still sda=0x82).

Okay, just curiosity, thnax for your assitance anyway...

cheers

Has anybody installed linux on a toshiba portege 7200?

I posted this question a month ago and got no responses.
At that time I coulnt even find the machine in stock, so maybe it
wasnt shipping at the time. I can now find the machine, and am ready

The entry on the linux laptop page points one to the 7140 and suggests
that the two machines are very similar.

I have occasionally been burnt before by buying a bleeding edge machine
and having to fuss with installation issues. I would like to make
sure that there arent any complications.

Anybody tried it yet?

Thanks for your help.

Would a Dell OptiPlex GXM 5166, (Pentium 166, 32-MB RAM, 6-GB Hard Drive,
S3Trio64V+), be a decent platform to start learning/working with Linux?

Thanks,
Bill Crocker

If the Intellimouse driver doesn't work then just use the 2 button PS/2
port mouse driver.

When you install Red Hat, you are given the option of a graphical or
text mode login. Choose the text mode, and then it will boot to a text
prompt instead of the GUI. If you already have it installed, then you
can change the boot option in linuxconf.
