Just get the latest kernel v 2.2.x, enable SMP, and compile it. You get both
CPUs utilized.

download and install the OSS sound driver : it will detect and tell you
everything you want to know about your sound card, then remove the OSS
driver and configure your kernel. Worked fine form me with c930.

Dear Amit,

When you dial into a service provider using ISDN modems you will usually get
a router on the other end. You just need them to walk you through a proper
setup with Linux ....

Linux supports CHAP and others ... Your ISP will be able to tell you which
one they prefer you using or if this is a dedicated line you maybe able to
tell them which type of authenication you would like to use.

I had the same sorts of problems with NT and an ISDN connection to the ISP.

Good Luck,
James Kosin

I have an EXB-8200 connected to my PC, but I went ahead and spent the extra
few bucks to get an external SCSI case. I marched on over to a local place
called MC Howard Electronics and got a great deal. I paid $20 or $25.

My point? A bargain on a SCSI enclosure can be had if you go looking.
Nobody wants to run full-height devices nowadays, so full-height
enclosures are not in a great deal of demand.

Rod,

While in a command shell try 'man mount' check out the -t option.

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/windoze is what i use. the -t or type comand has
many 'file' types that can be mount in your file system you need to know what
type of fat system you want to mount. IDE disk drives are use different device
special file types i.e. _not_ sda1 etc type 'df' to see the file system your
system has been configured for.

To mount the Win98 partition from Linux, use this command as root user:

mount -t vfat /dev/hdax /mnt

where hdax is your Win98 partition such as hda1, hda2, hda3 etc. If
you're not sure what the Win98 partition is, typing this command:

fdisk -l (the -l is a lower case L - not a one)

will display all your partitions which may help you determine which it
is.

Once mounted, you will have access to the Win98 partition in the /mnt
directory. From there you can use the cp command to copy files, or use a
file manager such as Midnight Commander, Tkdesk etc

I used /mnt as the mount point because that directory will already exist
on your machine. There's nothing to stop you from creating a new
directory such as /win98 or whatever, and mounting the partition there.

Subject: 2.2.3, ess 1888, & insanity
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 09:26:59 GMT

i've been having the strangest problems with my sound card (ess 1888) under
2.2.3 kernel. it worked ok (kinda buggy, but worked) under 2.0.36 but refuses
to work now.

i've tired compiling as modules and into the kernel. the best i get is the
ability to play ONE and ONLY ONE sound file. then it gives me the error i get
all the time:

        dma (output) timeout: IRQ/DRQ conflict?

i'm sure this isn't a conflict. my /proc/interrupts:

           CPU0
  0: 74022 XT-PIC timer
  1: 1706 XT-PIC keyboard
  2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
  3: 2319 XT-PIC eth0
  7: 1 XT-PIC soundblaster
 12: 30668 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
 13: 1 XT-PIC fpu
 14: 32841 XT-PIC ide0
 15: 4 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0

in addition, /dev/sndstat gives nothing helpful. just states the driver as
the ess 1688 when complied into kernel and the ess 1888 driver when in
modules

my /etc/conf.modules (part that pertains to sound):

# sound information
alias char-major-14 sb
options sound dmabuf=1
options sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1 dma16=5 esstype=1888

the card works fine under win95. it just won't work under 2.2.3. in
addition, after getting the dma timeout message, no program can write/read
to/from the floppy device. whether its mounted or not. i end up having to
reboot to restore use of the device. why is this?

preusing this newsgroup i've only found a few related posts...and the only
reply to the few were that the proprietory oss drivers should be used. but
the webpage for it doesn't even have support for the ess 1888. it seems only
people have trouble w/ the ess 1688 and 1868 ...but not this. has ANYONE
gotten this to work?!?!

ANY comments would be helpful. thanks in advanced.

I haven't heard of any way to access the Linux ext2 file system from NT.
If there is a way, it certainly won't be available from Microsoft as
part of NT. NT can't even access Microsoft's own FAT32 file system yet
without a third party driver.

Do you get the same error when you do a simulation write?

While you're in Windows, go in the control panel and open the 'system'
icon. Then using the list of hardware in device manager, write down all the
info listed for your hardware. (sound, video, monitor,etc..) Then highlight
the computer at the top of the list. Click properties. You can copy the
I/O, DMA, & IRQ for your sound card, video ,etc.... Write this down and
when you're in Linux, you'll have it handy. For the sound, run sndconfig
and choose your card and check the boxes for DMA,etc.. according to the
info you collected in MS Windows.

I can run Xwindows but only with 320x200 which is not workable!

I am searching urgently a Linux supported high-quality 24 Bit Stereo
Sound card (possibly with digital output). It shall be used for
applications like speech processing, audiometry and psychoacoustics.

Another important application would be measurement of transfer
functions, for this it is necessary that one can do input and output
at the same time _and_ match incoming and outgoing waveform exactly.

If you know Linux drivers, please contact me.

Does some know what hardware alternatives exist for fast analog output
with 44.1kHz sampling rate?

as I am away most of the next two weeks, please mail me also.

DING- finally got it working. Thanks to Don and Tim Stark for their very
helpful posts. A quick recap of what I did to get my 3COM 3c509b card working
with my RH 5.2 (2.0.36) system and the DHCP protocol. I didn't have to
upgrade the kernal or change the driver in the end.

1. Disabled PnP.

2. added the following to my /etc/conf.modules file

alias eth0 3c509

note: Tim Stark reccomended adding an options line to this file. My system
didn't like that.

3.typed insmod 3c509 (I don't know if this was neccessary, but it didn't hurt)

4. used netcfg to set up eth0 with DHCP and told it to activate on boot time.

thanks again to all

Ivan

Subject: Help - Unknown video PCI card under RHat 5.2 ??
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 10:59:51 GMT

Hi

I am trying to install a *new* video PCI card under Red Hat 5.2
but I am getting these messages:

(--) S3: PCI: unknown (please report), ID 0x8904 rev 1, Linear FB @
0xd0000000
(--) S3: Unknown S3 chipset: chip_id = 0x8904 rev. 1

The card was produced by an unnamed Far East manufacturer with no
support whatsoever. I can awkwardly see the screen with vga but no
svga...

Any indeas of how to make Linux recognize my card, please ?!

Thanks in advance

Nick
