I doubt you broke your chip. can you enter the HPT bios screen via the
Control H command? if so, can you then make the HPT bios see any drives? I
don't know what the newest bios is for your board but many people have had
trouble with the 1.21 version of HPT bios. I don't know if there is a way
for you to get to 1.22 HPT bios or not but if you can, try that as well.

Subject: tape device error
Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 01:11:16 GMT
Hi all.
I've had a scsi dat tape device in operation
for a number of months, but recently it
suffers from the following symptom:
Cannot open /dev/st0: Operation not supported by device
I've run a tape cleaner through the drive, checked
for status LEDs, checked permissions on the device
file, and re-ran mknod (in case st0 was corrupted).
All to no avail. I believe the drive is a Seagate.
Any suggestions? TIA

Subject: HP CDWriter+ 7200i
Date: Tue, 9 May 2000 21:41:20 -0400
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello everyone,
My friend gave me his old HP CDWriter 7200i a few weeks ago when
he bought a new drive, and in all of my five years of Linux experience I
have never seen a device that *refused* to work in Linux so adamantly.
Allow me to relate my story...
My machine is an AMD K6-2 450 with 192M of RAM. The 7200 is hooked up as
the secondary master, with a Creative Labs 52Xmx CDROM drive as the slave.
The drive is firmware version 3.01 and I am using cdrecord 1.8.1. I have
the scsi, ide-scsi, scsi generic, scsi cdrom (with vendor
specific extensions enabled) all compiled as modules with scsi logging
facility and verbose error reporting enabled. IDE/ATAPI CDROM and SCSI
emulation support are also compiled as modules.
Loading the scsi emulation related modules allows me to mount either CD
drive as /dev/scd[01]. Alternatively, loading the ATAPI related modules,
I can mount them as /dev/hd[cd]. I can freely switch between access
modes by switching modules, no problem. The problems arise with cdrecord.
When I try to record a CD or blank a CDRW, it always fails with a SCSI bus
error. The error almost always come at the very beginning of the burn
process and looks like this:
Last chance to quit, starting real write in 1 seconds.
Blanking PMA, TOC, pregap
cdrecord: Input/output error. blank unit: scsi sendcmd: retryable error
CDB: A1 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Sense Key: 0x5 Illegal Request, Segment 0
Sense Code: 0x20 Qual 0x00 (invalid command operation code) Fru 0x0
Sense flags: Blk 0 (valid) error refers to data part, bit ptr 0 (not
valid) field ptr 0
cmd finished after 21.756s timeout 9600s
cdrecord: Cannot blank disk, aborting.
I unfortunately, know nothing of SCSI systems and have no clue what to try
to fix this. Any hints?
Thanks,
Ross Vandegrift

Subject: S3 Trio 3D/2X bombs on Red Hat 6.1
Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 02:18:06 GMT
I guess I have a newbie question, though I have been playing at this OS
since Red Hat 3.1. We recently upgraded my machine at work with an AMD
K6-2 450 MHz processor, 128 Megs of RAM, and a generic AGP video board
with the S3 TRIO 3D/2X chipset and 8 Megs of video ram on board.
Since the upgrade I have been trying to install Red Hat 6.1. The OS
installs but I can't get the X server to work. Autoprobing doesn't
find the card when I install using the GUI Setup. The configurations I
tried were GNOME Workstation, and custom. I had marginally better luck
using the text installation. At least then I could indicate the video
card I have installed after autoprobe failed to find it. I have tried
running the Xconfigurator after install and it keeps reporting that
there is a problem with the X server. I did a little troubleshooting
(a little is all I am capable of) and got the below readout when I
input the X -probeonly command:
==============================================================
XFree86 Version 3.3.5 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
Release Date: August 23 1999
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

I just need a little help on writing a quick easy little script.
I am trying to get a ./whatiwantfile file to work from a script. I need
to do this because I cannot execute the application file directly. I
want to link to the script from my desktop or KDE Button.
I did this once before but had to reformat my HD and lost the script.
I tried to edit an already existing script to do what I want. I typed
in the commands and saved the file and then tried to link to it, but
I kept getting "cannot open /etc/???/???" It worked before but I don't
know what I have done different this time.
Here is an example of what I did:
#! /bin/sh
cd /etc/Rollemup
./Rollemup
this is what I typed and it worked the first time. I am trying to get
Rollemup Pinball to play. I saved the file as "rollem"

Those things are a royal pain in the arse. Xfree 3.3.6 has better luck
with them, and 4.0 might be even better. Check out the guides to
upgrading your X:

I believe RedHat has prebuilt RPMs mucking around somewhere if you want to
try 4.0, too. Good luck, HTH.
