We did get things working, at the end it was actually IRQ conflict beetween
Ethernet card and Promise Ultra 66 card. Things are now working great:

[mod@modtest mod]# hdparm -tT /dev/hda

/dev/hda: (Maxtor 6Gb on motherboard ATA33)
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 1.60 seconds = 80.00 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.52 seconds = 18.18 MB/sec
[mod@modtest mod]# hdparm -tT /dev/hde

/dev/hde: (IBM Deskstar 75, 45Gb on Promise Ultra66)
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 1.58 seconds = 81.01 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.20 seconds = 29.09 MB/sec
[mod@modtest mod]#

I think there might be something wrong with your settings, since 4MB/sec is
too slow and it sound like your disks aren't using DMA at all.

check hdparm /dev/hda and /dev/hdb to see if DMA is turned on at all.
 using_dma    =  1 (on)

and then try to turn it on with hdparm -d1 /dev/hda and on hdb. If your
system hangs, then check at startup if some devices are both using same IRQ
(if Mass Storage Controller is on same IRQ with something else).

Don't have same problem since they're on separate controllers (Maxtor in on
the board ATA33, and IBM Deskstar is on Promise Ultra66 card)... ...it works
great now. 30MB/sec on the IBM.

I've been offered a new Ricoh F680 fax/printer
for about $260. This is in The Netherlands (Europe)
where prices can be slightly higher than in the US.

My questions are the following:

- Does anybody have first hand experience with
this model. Is it any good???
- Does it have a straight copier function? Ricoh's
website is pretty vague on this point.
- Is this machine supported under linux? It has a
centronix h/w interface, according to the specs.

Please cc me personally, if you can manage to remove
the no-spam stuff.

Tia,
Guus.

You say it had a primary master and a primary slave, then the primary slave
was removed. Was the primary master's jumper changed from master to single.

I am having problems getting my mouse working under Linux with this
motherboard. I have two mice... a USB and a standard serial mouse. I
plan on using the standard serial mouse in Linux.

I cannot get it to recognize my mouse. I've tried setting the IRQs
manually for serial port 1. What should they be and what settings
should exist in Linux to find this mouse?

Thanks

The RTL8139 module is present and seems to be loaded.

[root@localhost /root]# ifconfig eth0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable

When I start ppp (I use rp-pppoe 1.9 for an ADSL pppoe connection)
I get the errors:

Jul 1 12:36:47 localhost pppd[5317]: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0

Anybody have any ideas? The card works fine in Windows.

Actually, there is. But it doesn't make any difference if I restart my

It is more like SCSI emulation "instead of" the normal IDE. It would be
useful to know what distribution you are using. If it is Redhat 6.1,
then that message about sr_mod is normal.

If you are running Redhat 6.1, then to avoid recompiling the kernel, you
will need add an entry to the linux section of /etc/lilo.conf:

append="hdd=ide-scsi"

Also, I am guessing you have another CDROM on hdc? If so, many people
have reported that if they have two drives on the same IDE interface
cable, they have a hard time getting ide-scsi working unless they use it
for both drives. So you also might want to include in /etc/lilo.conf:

append="hdc=ide-scsi"

Then execute /sbin/lilo and reboot.

> What should I do to get "cdrecord -scanbus" to find the drive?
>

Try the above change in /etc/lilo.conf. Make sure you have a bunch of sg
device files:
# ls /dev/sg*
/dev/sg0 /dev/sg13 /dev/sg3 /dev/sg8 /dev/sgd /dev/sgi /dev/sgn
/dev/sg1 /dev/sg14 /dev/sg4 /dev/sg9 /dev/sge /dev/sgj /dev/sgo
/dev/sg10 /dev/sg15 /dev/sg5 /dev/sga /dev/sgf /dev/sgk /dev/sgp
/dev/sg11 /dev/sg16 /dev/sg6 /dev/sgb /dev/sgg /dev/sgl /dev/sgq
/dev/sg12 /dev/sg2 /dev/sg7 /dev/sgc /dev/sgh /dev/sgm

Reboot and type "modload ide-scsi". What does it say?

Try "cdrecord -scanbus" again. What does it say?

Yep. . . Use fvwm and Netscape. There's a howto on LDP that explains
setting up fvwm so that it is locked down well. You gain quite a bit of
resources back by using fvwm over say gnome or kde so the lower ended cpu's
can be used. I won't vouch for a '486 though. . . Sure It could be done,
and if that's all you have for hardware, then by all means, go for it! But
if you're like me, my mom, and my grandma, you better find a Pentium. What
I'm saying is that a lower memory 486 with 36mb RAM will work - I've got one
of those and have tried it (with SCSI to help out) - but jumping up to my
p90 makes enough difference to make the system really useable.

happy surfing. . .

Try recompiling hwclock with the correct hardware addresses??? Sounds
like Dell switched things around, and you'll probably have to find out how
*they're* setting the clock. You can add this to whatever internet login
post-script you use, or can set up to run after connecting:

> rdate -p -s 132.163.135.130

That'll sync your clock with the atomic clock at the National Institute
of Standards and Technology (NIST) at login, or you can add the IP address
to your /etc/hosts file with a name like "nist." Example:
