Signal 11 usually indicates a hardware problem. This is an FAQ, see

Actually, I am trying to reinstall the system, and I have this problem,
after I configure everything, and the installation finishes, everything
hangs on the "Performing Post Install Configuration" What hardware problem
could cause this ???

Thanks

I have a Tekram MVP4 Board with AMD K6-2. 64 ram, Toshiba CDROM, Maxtor HD,
2 Netgear FA310TX. Video and Sound are in MVP4 chipset

Well, it's a built-in pci sound card.
Command "sndconfig" shows that it's vt82c686_5, product by VIA technology.
But I cann't get it work properly.

When "sndconfig" tries to load the module "vt82cxxx", it says "device busy".

My computer:

Athlon 600
Ep-KX133 motherboard ( with built-in sound card + modem riser by Epox)
G400 16Mb Video card
Seagate 17Gb

Any suggestions ?

Thanks a lot !!!

Anyone considering the purchase of a Sony peripheral for their computer
might want to give it some further thought. There clearly is not a
reciprocal relationship between what they sell and what they service.
-
I purchased a CD-RW drive back in April that just recently went bad
(won't read). When I called Sony service, I was told that I could not
get a replacement and that I had to ship it across the country to be
"repaired" (and we all know what that means...) - with a three (3) week
turnaround. Assuming that they keep their 3-week commitment, with
shipping both ways, I'd be without the use of the unit for at least
five weeks!!!
-
I hardly think that's reasonable or fair.
-
Compare this to HP, who under the same circumstances would simply ship
you out a replacement unit and issue a call-tag for the old one.
-
Sony is a behemoth in the marketplace and as such, they have an
obligation to scale their service facilities to meet demand. To not do
so is an indication of their lack of commitment to customer satisfaction
and an unwillingness to stand behind their products.
-
Buyer be ware!

Signal 11 is hardware related, usually memory. Another reason is
overclocking, which also leads to memory problems.

Unless they use the Rockwell RPI chipset. That's old hat now though
most 56k externals should be fine. There is a web site to check on but
I forget the URL - it appears on here pretty frequently and has something
like gromit in the URL somewhere.

You can use a Network Attached Storage unit
which would probably make it alot easier just
mount the nat via nfs and use the same mount point
for both machines

Another option is you can have a raid
in one machine and mount it from the
other via nfs

Hi, I just replaced my Kingston 64 Ram Module with a Crucial (micron) 128
ECC dimm. No overclocking on this system.

Any ideas ??? My compiler is egcs 2.91.66, could this be the problem ??? I
think this is some kind of weird version.

Thanks a lot, everybody who responded.

Looks as if I can get by with less-expensive hardware than I'd
thought. This gives me a good start; now I have a little more
reading to do before I take the plunge.

Thanks again,

Same version I'm using, nothing weird aboutit that I know of ( they do
say not to use the newest version, 2.95 I think, as won't compile the
kernel but not for sig 11 ).

I would try putting your original memory back and try again, see if the
results are the same. For the new memory make sure it is matched for the
bus speed, that is don't use PC66 speed memory if you have the board set
to use 100mhz bus.

Busy is usually indication of an IRQ or IO port conflict. try lspci and
see what it dumps out about known pci devices.

If you are going to rename it, you should use "K99xxx". That is what the
config tools do. type setup at the prompt, you can then select system
services to start.

I'd stay away from the integrated boards, the advantage is they are
cheaper to manufacturer. A modem on it will be a winmodem which would be
useless. I haven't seen many on the market, except some cheap ones from
PCCHIPS. I do have some old DEC celebris 3500 PCs that have integrated
video/NIC/sound and they have worked well under linux, but it really
depends what chipset the board has for each of those functions. If you
get one, make sure the onboard stuff can be disabled either in BIOS or
with jumpers

I'm running Mandrake 7.0 (from a magazine CD) with a Voodoo Banshee
AGP. It's been a while since the install, but I think the installer
didn't install the 3dfx server correctly. You should look on the CD
for the *3dfx* RPM, and manually install the XF86_3dfx server. I'm not
sure why you need to run 3.3.3, I'm using 3.3.5, works fine for me.
The server is also available at the 3dfx web site (sorry, can't
remember the exact URL).

On my CD, its called XFree86-3dfx-3.3.5-2mkd.i586.rpm in the
mandrake/rpm directory.

BTW, I'd like to install Xfree86 4.0.1, but I don't know where to find
the 3dfx driver for this version. Anyone know where it is?

John

That depends what you want to do with it, Peter. If it is going to be a
busy server, then two CPUs would be in order. If simply a workstation,
all you need is one CPU. Yes, you can run Linux with two monitors.
Please ensure that all your cards are supported under Linux. Most are,
but look into it forehand.
Modem cards can be winmodems, you don't want that.

I recommend a Actiontec PCI Master. It is supported under linux by the
manufacturer and has linux documentation in the manual. I have used one
every day for 4 months and it works great.

Hi,

I am a newbie and want my ADS7181 soundcard work with Redhat 6.1 I have
Kernel 2.4.0-test2 which has isapnp builtin. At startup it recognizes my
soundcard. Then i do 'insmod ad1816' with no problem. When I do a 'dmesg'
everything seems fine 'AD1816 Soundcard detected' (I can't remeber the exact
message but it was something like that). But when I want to play something,
eg. an mp3 in x11amp, i can't hear anything. I thought it was because the
volume was low but when i checked it with KDE's mixer but it was ok. Also
there is another problem that there is no '/dev/sndstat' to check the
status.
Isn't AD1816 driver compatible with my soundcard? or am i missing
something in kernel?

Thanks in advance...

I have an HP Laserjet model 2686A (one of the originals,
made in 1987) that I've been trying to get to work with
my Athlon 650 on a Gigabyte GA-7IX running RH 6.2.

I can "Print ASCII directly to port" from printtool
and can cat <file> > /dev/ttyS1 and have text come out.
If I try to "Print ASCII test page" or "Print Postscript
test page", however, the display on the printer flashes
"40".

I have set up the ghostscript filter in printtool with
the one labeled LaserJet (imagine! :-) ).

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Does anyone know what the error code numbers mean?
