Yeah, compiles in quite nicely in 2.4.0... About the only thing I
haven't had any troubles with since my recent return to Linux. :-)

Yes, the module loading is correct.
Can it be that your alsa drivers are newer then the alsa utilities ?
aplay version 0.4. is old, fetch a newer version (0.9.0-beta1) from
http://www.alsa-project.org/. Driver, library and utilities from
different versions do not always work together.

Not really. I had been using kernel 2.2.16 and for whatever
reason I never got it all to work together at the same time.
When I went to 2.2.18 it all fell into place nicely. Try what
you already have first. If it doesn't work you can always try
the kernel upgrade.

I heard that Mandrake 7.2 supports UDMA 100 (ATA/100 Promise) ... at the
moment I use the UDMA 66 because I had an old RH 6.1 which did not support
UDMA 100.
Since I do not need RH any more I would like to change from UDMA 66 to 100.
If I do so and try to boot again (LILO) I get the message
"Can“t mount the hard disk ...."
Is there any chance to avoid a reinstallation of Mandrake?
I have a dual boot system with Win98 and Mandrake 7.2.

Thanks in advance!

I have a cubx-E motherboard with four ide connectors :
-the first and the second are UltraDMA/33 IDE
-the third and the fourth are UltraDMA/100 IDE).
So I connect my hardrive (UDMA 100MHz) on the third one.
When I try to install Linux (Red Hat 7.0), the harddisk is not
detected. I do not want to connect the harddrive on the first or the
second IDE connector because they are only UltraDMA 33MHz.
Is there a solution to this problem ?
Steph.

Following up to myself here, because I was wrong. The AIT-1 drive is
likely Single Ended (SE). You *can* put an SE device on an LVD chain --
it just forces the whole chain (including any other LVD devices) into
the much slower (and more highly restricted cable length) SE mode.

Oops.

I haven't got /etc/filesystems but in /proc/filesystems:

        ext2
        reiserfs
        umsdos
        msdos
        vfat
nodev proc
nodev smbfs
nodev ncpfs
        iso9660
nodev autofs
nodev devpts

Can/should I just copy this to /etc/filesystems? Does the nodev on
autofs stop an auto type mount?

Subject: Safe to use UDMA?
Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 14:20:58 GMT

Hello,

I recently purchased a hard drive and would like to get the best
performance from it that I safely can. The hard drive is a Western
Digital WD200BB and is installed as primary/master (/dev/hda) on my Soyo
SY-5EHM (rev. 1.3) mainboard. When I installed the drive I used the
included 'EZ-Install' program to set the drive to UDMA/33 mode (the
fastest mode supported by the mainboard). When I run `hdparm -i
/dev/hda`, hdparm reports that dma is not enabled (I thought it would be
with CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO=y). When I run `hdparm -t /dev/hda` it averages
about 4.5 - 5.0 MB/sec. I would like to turn on dma (UDMA/33) with
`hdparm -d1 -X66` but have read that my data might get corrupted. Do I
need to worry or should I go ahead? I've included some information about
my configuration below.

Thanks,

What are the pitfalls to avoid regarding chipsets, BIOS, onboard drivers

Has anybody had and really good, or really bad, experiences with particular

In short what do people think is the best motherboard to go for at the

Because you will die horribly. Your /var and /home are on the same
partition as your fixed system. read the partition-HOWTO to learn more!

If you don't know, then plainly you should go and find out. Check the

I assume you have the proper chipset selected in your kernel? A lot
of chipsets will seem to work with the incorrect driver selected, but
will not use all the features or not use them properly.

Do you get any messages about ide0 resets and DMA being disabled?
Boot your system in single-user mode (to reduce the chances of Bad
Things happening), turn on DMA, and run hdparm's tests. Then use
dmesg to check for DMA being disabled. If that happens, you probably
can't use DMA, even if both your hard drive and chipset claim to
support it. You can force the IDE driver to keep turning DMA back on,
but that may cause nasty data corruption.

I'm also suspicious about the "EZ-Install" program. The drive should
be able to automatically put itself in the correct mode depending on
what the BIOS/OS tells it to do.

Just don't get any CDRW made by Acer. I had had problems with
Acer-6206A and Acer-8432IA CDRW. Both gave me all sort of problems.
When the local CompuSA had the IOMega 12x10x32 CDRW on sale for $100
(after rebate and huge marked down), I got one of this CDRW and have had
no problem writing a regular CDR (4x) at 12x speed. The IOMega 12x10x32
CDRW that I have could easily reap an audio CD in less than 3 minutes
and write on a regular 4x CDR at 12 speed for less than 6 minutes.

I one last thing. Should you need to get a CDRW drive, it certainly
will be a plus if has a burnt-proof feature.

My mobo has a built-in soundcard that is ac97 compliance but the linux
kernel was not able to initialize the midi. Then, I installed the ALSA
package and now am able to use the sequencer and midi ports. So, you
might want to try to install ALSA package instead of using the soundcard
driver from linux kernel. You can download the ASLA package from
