I obtained the same result (4.7KB/sec) twice during the weekend. In fact, the 
only reason for trying a 2nd time was in order to verify the result of my 1st 
attempt.
In contrast, this morning, after reading your replies, I got 7.41 KB/s.
The only change I have made in between to my config files was to drop the +mp 
option to ipppd since I only bought a 64K connectivity. I hope this was the 
reason for the poor results I got before I have changed it.
