Would it save Guy's time (and the time of other busy volunteers) if newbie
volunteer/s join and perform more routine tasks (if necessary, under the
supervision of the oldtimers)?
How feasible is to keep a backup of the scripts and config files to be
able to recover from newbie's screwups (except for the mirror disks, of
course)?

Bingo!
Guy, Mulix, Shlomi, Omerm, etc. - get busy preparing carrots and candies
for us busy/lazy/selfish volunteers. :-)

About other suggestions:
1. Sourceforge project? Will be necessary only if we want to give
multiple people write-access to CVS archives. I don't see this
   happening.
What is necessary to get read-only access to scripst and configuration
   files now?
2. Mailing list for maintainers? Let's use the existing and dormant
mailing list (what are its subscription instructions, again?).

There is no IGLU Cabal. It must first be built.
