WindowMaker's dock allows you to easily run a program in a certain
desktop. This is actually great if you want to have a desktop that is for
running a number of applications.

For instance, when I needed to set up a desktop with games for my nephews,
this is what I chose: Then know that to run a ame then double-click on the
game's icon, and its window pops up (no matter whether or not it was
running).

Make sure you lock the icons before you let the kids play with them,
though...

As for me, my current favorite is IceWM, becxause it is light-weight, and
because it doesn't take much time to set-up a very functional working
environment. It is not as configurable as fvwm, but somehow it seems to
include almost 95% of the functionality I currently believe I need, with
around an hour of tweaking (around 80% out-of-the-box)

It also has good handling of window positions, if you work with multiple
xterms.
