One tangential note to Dotan's article regarding inserting non-printing characters:

In OpenOffice, you can use "Insert->Formatting Mark", which gives you a handy submenu of such characters. This is more convenient than using "Insert->Special Character", which requires sorting through a bunch of character subsets.
