Yeah - mismatched packages can be definitely hell when a unix maintains two
or three separate branches (debian, *bsd etc).

That has to be balanced with the fact that Debian, at least, ships with a
rather ancient (though admittedly patched and secure) set of packages.  Lots
of features are simply not available in older versions.
