I do believe other distros do that as well.  Only they come preinstalled with
the 2.4.3 (or whatever) - but there are 2.2.19 rpms hidden inside the CD.

No argument about bundling two copies of gcc - the 2.96.x (when the world has
bypassed that tree and moved to gcc 3 or stuck with one of the 2.95 series
gccs).

There are other reasons why I love slackware (package management that lets
you add just what you want - no more, no less).  Try doing a mandrake 8
install without any single X component :) [tried to, but X and icewm got
installed - at least kde and gnome didnt decide to get loaded as well]
