Yes. That much I can guess. No method can protect all the data if one
unplugs the power. What I was thinking was if after a period of disk
activity the machine is idle and then there is a power outage, at least,
these new file systems would/might provide a way of saving my data. That
appears to be the case.

Thanks for all the replies. As of now, I just took the plunge and
converted all the partitions to ext3. If there are problems, I will be
back bugging people requesting ways for retrieval :-)
