This is confusing technical reasons with advocacy ... not a very good idea.
ext3, jfs, sgi xfs etc all have their uses, and are good in certain
situations, not a good idea in other situations (several small files - like a
mailserver, small number of very large files - say a ftp site or an mp3
server, etc)

The wc util is specifically for this purpose. For this file:
o wc 143.lost reveals : lines   words  bytes   filename
                        12      57     428     143.lost
o wc -L filname ... reveals the length of the longest line
