There should be a lock file that was not deleted when you bailed out from
the session.

Usually lock files are located in /var/lock (and then possibliy under a
subdirectory there). The naming convention also varies between apps but
generally it would be something like 'lock..ttyS0'.

Search for anything that has ttyS0 and delete that file.

This should allow you to use the modem.
