Dear Doc.
The first thing is use a popular NIC, *least* make sure it has a RealTec
chipset on the card, there are lots available in the local mkt
this will ensure that it works well on linux.
the rest is quite simple.
a) insert the card and make sure its fixed properly in the slot.
b) boot up linux.
c) Kudzu will popup and say " Hey i found a new Device"
Most Cable service providers run a DHCP server so pls find out from your
cable service provider if he is running a DHCP server.
if so then just setup your card to accept DHCP.
hopefully its all been setup correctly and will work straight off.
d) if they dont Run DHCP then ask them to provide you the network
details
make a note of
1) IP address
2) Subnet mask
3) Gateway IP address
4) DNS server IP
once you have these details you can fill it up manually
run <netconfig> as root.
It really should not be an issue
Hope this helps
Cheers!
Praveen Sundaram
