At least for me, a news server is very important.

Here is why:

First of all, I am on dial up. I use pop to download
mail.

Suppose I subscribed to a mailing list. Then I will
have to reply to the confirmation mail, then download
all the mail to my local machine about everyday. If
I cannot connect for a few days for some reason, a huge
amount of mail will be waiting at my pop server. I will
have to download them _all_ since I dont use web mail.
Or, I will have to inform the mailing list program that
I don't want to get mail for so many days.
Also, to subscribe, I will have to tell the mailing-list
program again.
In short, quite a lot of downloading.

OTOH, if I subscribe or unsubscribe to a news group, I
just tell about it to my news reader, offline. Also,
I just download the headers, and the bodies of interesting
or important posts only, read them offline, and reply offline,
and then connect again to send out the replies. So simple
and so less downloading.

For very active groups like the debian-user group, I am
better off using their news group version than their
mailing list version.

I wish there was a news group version of this mailing list.

Regards,
Santanu
