OTOH, if I subscribe or unsubscribe to a news group, I just tell about it to my news reader, offline. Also,
I just download the headers, and the bodies of interesting
or important posts only, read them offline, and reply offline,
and then connect again to send out the replies. So simple
and so less downloading.
Sounds like you want an IMAP mailbox, at any rate.
