give garnome a try ! it is a build system for gnome. it is available at http://www.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome/

Thanks bobby,

I knew about garnome, but I am at present really short
of disk space. I have a total of 2GB diskapce at my
disposal. And garnome says it requires atleast 1.2 GB
free space at build time, which I do not have. I have
only 700MB free at the moment.

If someone could tell me where to get the debian
packages of GNOME 2.6 from.

Does Debian backports have it. I tried looking at
their collection, couldn't find... Any pointers?

Cheers.

I think you should look at Gnome's own site. They might be having packages.
But AFAIK, unofficial packages are normally maintained only for sid(unstable) and if
I'm not wrong you're using testing.
