First of all I have'nt used garnome myself but I'm sure, you can tweak the
free space requirements there. And if you really want gnome2.6 then it is
present in experimental right now. My sources.list has the following
entries:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib

# The official debian experimental branch.
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ ../project/experimental main contrib
# GNOME 2.6 pending packages
