Just see what happens to Debian when you install a package from source
because there is no package yet available.
I haven't had Deadrat die when I have installed source based software
without using RPMs. Or when you want to roll back to a previous version
of the software using RPMs.
Or when you want to backport newer software on RH. 

RH has saner defaults for software as well (unchrooted Postfix,
postgresql.conf in the right place, ...).
