Hmm. Could you get 24-bit color in Windows on the same machine? Also,
make sure that the drm kernel module for your graphics chip is
installed to improve rendering. Espeically by drool-inducing openGL
xscreensaver modules. ;-)

it has been a while (5 years) since I achieved a network-accessible
XDM. I also have moved to gdm. So I cannot recall how exactly it is
done. Try running nmap on ip.of.debian.pc from the other desktop to
see if xdmcp (port 177) is open. Perhaps you have iptables blocking
this port.
