Yes, I know...but I refuse to go this way ;-) Did this once earlier on
encoutntering the same problem...Need to know why this is
happening...though I understand the problem generally.

Yes...getting IP & DNS by DHCP from BSNL.

No file named dhcpcd...or dhcpclient or similar.....don't understand
what you mean by pump.

Use roaring-penguin  package to connect by ppoe.

Any other ideas? Anyone?
