Hi

I have Redhat 6.1 installed and use GNOME. I find that the
memory usage is very high. I have 64MB RAM and when I login
and do a free -t it shows between only 4 to 8 MB free (it reaches
8 MB free when I disable the screensaver, otherwise it takes
up another 3-4MB).

Note that I have no other apps running, except a "GNOME Terminal".

The memory usage shows the "X" server taking up unusually high memory
of ~23MB!

So any ideas as to how to reduce the memory usuage so that there's
some more free memory ?

Or is that GNOME itself is just a memory hogger and I have to choose
another Window Manager ? How does KDE fare here ?

Another question :
By default, 6 instances of mingetty run to provide for the 6 virtual
consoles (CTL-ALT-F1-F6). Now, I rarely use 1 of them. Is there a way
to reduce that 6 to 1. What file do I have to edit to make only
one copy of mingetty to be spawned ?

Cheers,
TIA
rampi
