Dear All,

I have for some time tried to get my Ericsson SH888 to communicate with Linux.
However thus far I have failed - and turn to You good people for assistance.

I'm running a Linux kernel 2.2.12, compiled with IrDA support (into the kernel)
and the following modules available:

/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/irtty.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/irport.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/irlpt.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/ircomm_tty.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/tekram.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/litelink.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/girbil.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/esi.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/actisys.o

In /dev I have:

laptoy:/dev# ls -l ir*
crw-r--r-- 1 roott root 161, 0 Nov 12 17:36 ircomm0
crw-r--r-- 1 roott root 161, 1 Nov 12 17:36 ircomm1
crw-r--r-- 1 roott root 161, 16 Nov 12 17:36 irlpt0
crw-r--r-- 1 roott root 161, 17 Nov 12 17:36 irlpt1
crw-r--r-- 1 roott root 60, 64 Nov 14 00:59 irnine
aptoy:/dev#

I've compiled irda-utils-0.9.5 without any significant problems (allthough the
configre script barfed a fewtimes), and I am able to communicate between my
PalmIII and my Linux box using IrDA. No significant problems.

However communication to my (brand new) Ericsson seems broken - and I am left
without a clue. Here is the story:

laptoy:~# irattach /dev/ttyS1
1.1 Tue Nov 9 15:30:55 1999 Dag Brattli
laptoy:~# irmanager -s1 -d0

One, nice beep can be heard.

In /var/adm/messages:

Nov 14 00:53:23 laptoy irattach: Serial connection established.
Nov 14 00:53:23 laptoy kernel: IrDA: Registered device irda0
Nov 14 00:53:24 laptoy irattach: executing: 'echo laptoy > /proc/sys/net/irda/devname'
Nov 14 00:53:25 laptoy modprobe: can't locate module

(I cannot figure what module cannot be located, my conf.modules has:

        alias tty-ldisc-11 irtty
        alias char-major-161 ircomm_tty
)

laptoy:~# cat /proc/net/irda/discovery
IrLMP: Discovery log:

laptoy:~#

On my Ericsson, I activate the IR and place within range of the IR-port on my
laptop (approx. 15 cm from the port, same distance as I use with my Palm).

laptoy:~# cat /proc/net/irda/discovery
IrLMP: Discovery log:

name: SH 888, hint: 0x9104, saddr: 0x05d265c1, daddr: 0x292227fa

So far so good.

I fire up minicom on the appropriate device - /dev/irnine - and minicom hangs
trying to initialize the modem. Bummer!

I also see this in syslog:

Nov 14 00:59:03 laptoy kernel: IrLAP, no activity on link!

Now, to leave nothing unattempted, two xterms with cat reading from hhv sending
to /dev/irine is fired up, and I try to manually punch in some commands (ATZ,
f.eks). After unreasonably long time I get the reply "ERROR".

At this point I started to re-re-re-re-read howto's, mailing list archieves
etc., but I must have managed to miss the parts where the relevant information
is listed. Can anyone help me out? - describe how they've managed to get
connected, point me to information or make fun of me where I miss the obvious
and screw up everything?

If any further information on my setup is required, please do not hessitate to
contact me.

Thanks in advance.
