Okie, I promised a status-report on how my SH888/ThinkPad thing went.
Unfortunately I have to say "less than smooth" - but it's neither the phone nor
Linix which is to blame.....
After talking with a few tech-support guy at France Telecom for a while (who
claimed different things such as "You need a special subscription for
72FF/month to use data over our net" and "Ohh, if you just want to dial up FROM
your phone, then you need nothing extra - that i possible with a normal
subscription), I decided to try their "Mobile Office" option. So I subscribed
- and waited the 48 hours they said it would take before it should work. Still
negative. I called tech-support again: "Ohno, Linux doesn't work, you must use
Windows". Ticked me off, hung up, called again and got another guy who
coincidentially said something like "I know from experience that Linux and IrDA
works OK with the Ericsson SH888". This guy also found out, that even though I
was billed for the data-subscription, noone bothered to enable that service for
me. So now I could indeed dial UP - and after similar troubles send faxes,
recieve faxes etc.
So in short: France Telecom are EXPENSIVE and I do need the "Mobile Office"
option to be able to use the phone for anything but voice.
Also, once the phone-stuff was working, I had absolutely NO PROBLEMS with
Linux/IrDA.
Let me conclude by giving all the helpfull people who have replied to my
numerous mails (and also those who wrote the code) a big THANKS :)
