No, I think it's me who have done something really silly. The irattach from 
irda-utils-0.9.5 cannot be used with a normal 2.2.x kernel. Either you have 
to use irda-utils-0.9.4 (as distributed by Redhat/Mandrake-6.1), or you
must patch your kernel with patch-2.2.13-irda5 which you can find at:

        http://www.cs.uit.no/linux-irda/snapshots/v2.2/

I'll make a new irattach which understands both 2.3 and 2.2 kernels.
