I don't know about SuSE kernels, but the plain kernel 2.2.13 with
irda-patch-12
works for me using irda-tools-0.9.5.
connections to the L7089 and a kodak digital camera have been tested with
this configuration.

what kind of adapter do you use? here it is a jeteye dongle connected to
a serial port. my motherboard does not have an irda port. the dongle
was hard to get and is expensive. what did you pay for the hardware?
