I'm having the same (well, similar) problems, same dongle, kernel and
irda-utils versions.
My workaround is to:
(1) not use -s 1
(2) irattach /dev/ttyS0 -d girbil ; sleep 2 ; killall irattach
(3) irattach /dev/ttyS0 -d girbil
That gets it working for me...
