While what Dag says is true, it presupposes that the pilot is sane,
certainly with Os 3.1.1
and the IrDA library when pilot-link tries to negociate a higher speed
than 9600 bad stuff 
happens, less so with Os 3.5.1. I suspect that the pilot does something
broken when it issues
a change baud rate command to its IrDA layer. When I use pilot-xfer to
sync with PILOTRATE=9600
over IrDA it goes at about 38400-57600.
