I have been working on the RaQ for about 7 months now, I really like the boxes.

The Cleveland Linux Users Group is currently working to porting RedHat 5.2
to Cobalt projects (ftp://ftp.cleveland.lug.net/mipsel).
: Well that is fine by me. I always compile things personally
: anyways. I don't even mind if I have to muck with a bit of
: source and patches, so long as I can use SRPMS.

It is RedHat, expect for the kernel and the Cobalt specific hardware.
: Great. What version of RedHat is it based on? I've used 4.2,
: all the 5.x releases and now 6.0 as well. My preference for a
: remote machine like that (it's over 4000km away), is a 5.x
: release that is fairly stable if possible.
Basically I call it RedHat 5.Cobalt :) It is very stable. I am currently
working on migrating some of the cobalt specific kernel hacks to the newer
mips kernel in hopes of having RedHat 6.? and kernel 2.2 running on the
cobalt equipment in the next couple of months.

:
: Hmm. Is it safe to upgrade the kernels on these machines,
: without having a remote "hardware-reset" switch? I know x86
: kernels usually boot no problem, but if I'm not mistaken, some
: versions of the kernel just will not boot at all on other
: architectures. I'm primarily concerned with having an updated
: kernel for the utmost of security.
Where version of the kernel? Right now now of the Cobalt kernel hacks are in
the Linux/MIPS 2.2 kernel. At the present time there is no upgrade kernel
for the Raq.
: Any suggestions of Linux-MIPS reading material on the web or
: other URL's pertaining to linux on MIPS?
