Three days ago I was brand new to linux (RH 5.2)
I had this same problem when I tried to configure LILO for win98, NT40
and RH5.2 My computer would boot up and I would get "LI" on the screen and
it would just sit there. I think I had several heart attacks.
I tried reinstalling LILO after booting off the rescue disk but it said
the partition was not found. So I restored the mbr using Norton rescue
disks - no luck.
I sys'd my C: drive using a win98 boot disk, still no luck. I used my
linux boot disk and tried uninstalling LILO (using lilo -u) but it wouldn't
uninstall (said wasn't found). I also tried installing LILO again but there
were errors in set up and it wouldn't complete.
So finally I installed LILO again but only configured it for dos and
linux (left out NT), and viola! All fixed (*phew*). Now if I select dos is
then gives me the win98/nt boot menu, and all is well. I hope this helps
and good luck. You can always boot off the Linux install boot disk if you
need to.

Does anybody now of a system to manage virtual hosts easily?
Something which would allow something like (hate to use the word) a
Domain wizard?
ie automatic virtualhost creation accross qmail/apache/proftpd/bind (or
similar packages).
I know of things like webmin, linuxconf, but they are more of a _broad_
interface to different services.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sean.

Yes, it is possible to install the Slackware Linux distribution in a
directory on (one of) your Windows partition(s), although I do not know
how simple (or difficult) it is. See the Slackware home page for more
information, http://www.slackware.com

I've installed the rpm for gdm 1.0.0-5 and it works fine, but
only if I use the default images in the face browser. There are
two problems I'm encountering when trying to set user images:
1. An image in ~usr/.gnome/photo is ignored. The face browser
continues to use the default image.
2. gdm (or X) keeps crashing if I place the image in
/usr/share/faces/<username>. When gdm starts, the default X
background color pops up, then a second later, the screen
flickers black and this process keeps repeating over and over. I
then have to ctr-alt-del to reboot and enter single user mode to
login again. I've tried both xpm's and gif's to see and got the
same which each.
Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks,
Thomas

I'm currently using the latest Gnome/Enlightenment with RH5.2. While
I don't have horror stories to tell, I am not entirely happy with it's
stability (it seems to crash an underlying X process that I can't track
down) and plan to migrate to KDE just for the stability. I thing the
Look/Feel of Gnome and Enlightenment kicks ass, but I'm willing to wait

You say you have a scanner (external?), two SCSI drives and a SCSI CD-ROM.
The error says you have three connectors in use and only two at a time are
permitted. Are your HDD's wide and the CD-ROM narrow? If so, that's your
problem. You can't use both internals and the external at the same time. If
that's not the case, perhaps you have the HDD's connected to the 68-pin
internal and the CD-ROM to the 50-pin internal. That's still a no-no if you
have anything connected to the external. Finally, if you've terminated all
three connectors, that's a non-no. You may use (and terminate) one external
and one internal, or both internals.

;)

Pentium III chip with the individual serial number that can
track your web surfing and buying habits can now have the ID number
turned on and off by software. Following some links I found the
www.fightdivx.com website and noticed that they have a Intel Boycott
page with links, quotes and info on why you should boycott the
invasion of privacy Pentium III chips. Just like everyone suspected,
the ID number can be taken without a customers knowledge. Just like
cellular phone fraud, once someone has your unique ID number, they
could pose as you on the internet. Do not be fooled by reports that
this problem is fixed because Intel disabled this feature by software
on their up coming chips. Information is power. They want to know
your surfing and buying habits. That is what this is all about. Here
is the link to the page with the boycott info and links.

I know that there are quad Intel boxes, just as I know there are lower
priced Alpha systems.. the ones I originally mentioned were somewhat
equivalent in a server environment (without getting into the details of
the MB architecture) in that they had the same amount of memory (256MB),
the same amount of disk space (9.1GB) and the same type of disk
subsystem (U2W SCSI)... one *primary difference is that its a *single*
Alpha vs. a *dual* Intel at approximately the same clock speed (533Mhz
for Alpha, vs 500Mhz for Intel). Some app mixes would do better on the
dual Intel setup, other mixes would do better on the single Alpha
system...

But in a nutshell, assuming that your modem is on
IRQ5 (don't try IRQ2) you can change the
IRQ using 'setserial' (Read the fantasic man page)
After you get it figured out the correct command line
and are sure you are running under minicom,
you can add the change to the rc.serial init script.

As I understand the source, it uses a buffer deep within the kernel that
I was unable to figure out, and would not lightly change. If there's
another way, I'll do it, including mallocing buffers in the driver:
I'll happily trade memory for speed in this case.

The /proc filesystem is a virtual filesystem and is created dynamically by
the loaded kernel. /dev is a different story. You may be better off
backing up your important stuff (i.e., /home & /usr directories),
reinstalling directly onto the new hard drive, and then restoring your
backed up stuff.
But is there any reason you can't keep your boot partition on the current
drive and just create new (and bigger) partitions on the new one?

When I need to move crap between drives I find the tar command to be quite
usefull:
Assuming you have your new drive mounted as /mnt/newdrive, and also assuming
you have this on one large partition (I usually would seperate out /home and
/usr, but it's up to you):
Go through every directory in / excluding /proc and /mnt and do the following:
[root@hostname /]# tar -c dirname/ | tar -xC /mnt/newdrive/
That should tar up the whole directory and pipe it out to another tar that will
be untarring what is coming through the pipe after changing the current
directory to /mnt/newdrive so that it all shows up in the right directory.
Make sure you don't do it for the /mnt directory (duh.. recursion). and just
mkdir /mnt/newdrive/proc but don't put anything in it.
This should work for copying the crap in /dev also (since a distro usually has
a .tar.gz of the proper /dev dir anyway).
You will also need to properly install lilo on the machine (I strongly
recommend creating a bootdisk with the proper kernel and initrd on it while you
still have your old hd up and running, then reboot with the disk giving it the
root=/dev/sdxN. If all goes well, reconfigure lilo, run it, and you should be
in business.
Dave.
P.S. YMMV, but the tar thing is a trick I like much better than using cp.

Kernel 2.2.3 has all kinds of support for Parallel devices, but as of yet, I
have been able to find a configuration that will run my old, discontinued,
Eagle Exabyte TR-3 Parallel port Travan 3 drive.
Does anyone know of a driver, or a combination of kernel options and drivers
that might actually get this beast running, and backing up my Linux boxes.
This is the last Windows-era piece of hardware that I have been unable to get
running under my now complete M$ free LAN.
Eventually I am just going to buy a completely Linux supported Travan drive
(any suggestions?), but I would at least like to give this a good shot.
Surely someone out there has one of these tape drives, and has gotten it
spinning?
Any help is appreciated.
