Hi folks,
SuSE Linux 6.1, Kernel 2.2.7
/var/log/warn tells me:
--cut--
Jun 17 17:46:37 berlin modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
block-major-48
Jun 17 17:46:37 berlin last message repeated 7 times

Jun 17 17:46:38 berlin modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module

Jun 17 17:46:38 berlin last message repeated 7 times
--cut--

I found no aliases under /etc/conf.modules to these blocks ...nor any
hint on the Suse-Support-Database....
I just found the hint to change the /etc/conf.modules alias and to
remove the /lib/modules/2.2.5/misc/serial.o file to prevent the double
load of the serial-device support in the 2.2.5-Kernel with the ugly
error messages at boot-up...
But what the heck is this blck-major-48 and ..-72 stuff?
I configured the kernel, compiled it with loadable module support with
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
and
make bzlilo

Any suggestions? More details? He made this errormessage just once and
than not again..but I am interested in the meaning of this message...

Greetings Kai

Because MS programmers are too lazy to just write code in a manner that
is easily detected. Unfortunately for them, Andrew S. is far from
lazy.

I wonder if Gabriel is now guilty of a "hate crime" - inviting

As far as slapping heads around, I doubt if many linuxites

When I try to compile different sources (kernel, ada programs etc.) I
get always the error message:

ld cannot open crtbegin.o

This file can be found at /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/2.7.2.3/crtbegin.o
Where is the problem on my system? Do I have to set an environment
variable or do I have to make a link to my libraries?

Please respond by email

I have successfully installed Windows 98 and Linux on the same machine
with Windows using FAT32. The Windows partition should be mounted
under Linux as a vfat file system. Then Linux has no trouble reading and

writing to the Windows files system.

If you believe Microsoft and other vendors of Windows products for
disk management, it should be safe to convert to FAT32 from FAT16.
This should not affect the LInux partitions, but it could conceivably
affect lilo, depeneding on how you configured it. You should make sure
you have a boot disk---any RH5.* or beyond will provide one that will
allow you to boot by using mkbootdisk. Then you can run lilo after
converting the file system. It is probably safe to put lilo in the MBR,

but I would put in somewhere in the Linux part of the disk: either
/boot or /, depending on how you partitioned the disk.

This was happening to me as well --- to fix, I set the environment

This solved the problem for me.

During bootup, I get a couple of errors - but I'm not sure they really
affect the day-to-day running of my system (I'm pretty sure I've been
getting these errors since I first upgraded from kernel 2.0.36 to 2.2.*);

Jun 17 13:04:09 blackdeath kernel: Symbol table has incorrect version number.
Jun 17 13:04:09 blackdeath kernel: Cannot find map file.

I get that every boot. Is this serious? Fixable?

That's not surprising. Since IIS is not open source, the
only way to find bugs in it is through trial-and-error
attacks or dumb luck. Microsoft calls this a Good Thing.
Their theory is that security holes are only a problem if
someone finds them. They're wrong.

The problem with that thinking is that it means that the
first person to find an exploitable security hole in your
new web server is likely to be malicious. With open source
software, most security holes are found by the many
developers. I'd rather have my security holes found by
developers than by crackers, thanks.

Of course, the latest e-mail 'viruses' aren't viruses at
all. They're a natural outgrowth of two things: the fact
that Windows is really a single-user system that doesn't
expect to deal with malicious programs or data; and the fact
that much Windows software (MS and third-party) encourages
users to abdicate their responsibility for checking insecure
data and instead let applications freely exchange it.

I could write a Unix e-mail 'virus' like Melissa in ten
minutes. My virus could, let's say, wipe out the user's .rc
files, then hunt through the system for common mail logs and
alias files, parse out a bunch of addresses, and forward
the virus to them. It could also mail me the user's
Netscape/lynx cookies files, which would allow me to
impersonate him on web sites he frequents.

This would be easy to program, but would never work, because
Unix users just *don't* set up their software to
automatically execute e-mail attachments. That's partly
because they know better, but it's also because e-mail
clients for Unix aren't stupid enough to present that
possibility as a default. So the responsibility for these
e-mail worms falls partly on the users who unknowingly
spread them, but also on their software makers for trying
too hard to make things transparent and undermining simple
security precautions in the process.
