Is the maching *crashing* and rebooting or are you just 'suddenly'
presented with a Login: prompt? Generally, linux does not crash unless
there is a hardware fault. If you have a bleeding edge video card and/or a
mis-configure X11 setup, the X server could be crashing. Also, if your
sound card is mis-configured or something like that, you could be having
problems. Are you on a laptop and don't have APM configured properly?
This too will cause problems.

Can you tell us *exactly* what your machine is doing. 'every now and
then, it just decides to log me out' is somewhat vague. Please tell us:

        1) Are you running X11 (GUI)?
        2) Are you using startx (B&W console login) or xdm (colorful GUI
login with Tux in a red hat)?
        3) Is the machine *crashing* (i.e. 'kernel panic', rebooting,
                etc.)?
        4) If it is X11 that is dieing, what kind of video board do you
have? Which X server? Which window manager?

I have Red Hat (5.2) on two computers here. No problems, other than
the laptop not having a working LCD panel and a storm related power
failure last night (which took my main system down, but it happily did
its fsck on power restore and was happy). I've been re-booting the
laptop every few minutes, but that is because I am working on building
a boot/root floppy set in preparation of getting a replacement laptop
and want to see if I can manage to just to a backup restore, over the
ethernet from a floppy boot, rather than hassle with a fresh install
(can be a total pain for a laptop).

I deal with numerous Linux boxes, all running some flavor of Red Hat
Linux (most RH 5.2, some RH 5.1, some RH 6.0).

The only problems I've head about with RH 6.0 relate to problems with
gnome or KDE being a bit flacky under some situations.

The other other problems were due to silly operator error (messing up
/etc/fstab and loosing the /dev/ptys file system, etc.).

The 3c59x module as if the RH6.0 kernel version does not seem to support
this card. There might be a beta test driver available or an update or
patch availble from
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html.

We recent recived a Gateway box with one of these -- we swaped it with a

supported the card in the older Gateway (it used to run Linux) and we
knew we could get bleeding edge drivers from 3Com's web site.

Subject: insmod: 'couldn't find the kernel version the module was compiled for'
Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 06:27:11 GMT

I am trying to build a boot/rescue disk set for use with my laptop. The
laptop's LCD panel recently died and it looks like I might have to get a
replacement machine. Except for the screen the machine is fine -- it
works with an external monitor, however, lugging even a 13" monitor
defeats the whole point of a laptop.

I am running RedHat 5.2 on this machine. Given the hassle involved in
installing Linux in the first place, I want to try an easier solution.
I have been using a PCMCIA EtherNet card (3Com 3C589) to back up the
machine with tar using tar RMT hack to a (SCSI) tape drive on my main
system. I figure if I can create a boot/rescue with fisk, mkdir,
mke2fs, tar, and a functioning network, I could use this to 'restore' a
backup of my current laptop to a new laptop.

I downloaded yard and have created a boot/rescue disk set (2 disks), but
when I try to run the pcmcia startup, I get the message:

couldn't find the kernel version the module was compiled for

from insmod. I am assuming I am missing some magic file or something,
but I cannot figure out what is missing.

The man pages are not really helpful and nothing in the other
documentation that I can find is helpful either. Can someone more
knowledgeable about insmod give me a clue as to what is missing?

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps Red Hat updated sysklogd: earlier versions of klogd did not have
the symbol-translation capability that requires finding System.map.
Note that sysklogd's current maintainer is a Debian developer; maybe
Debian is supporting Red Hat's quest for market domination.

I guess you mean Debian. Yes, there is, if you don't go through the
trouble of putting the new System.map file in the right place.

I don't know. I don't use Red Hat (by choice, by the way). But maybe
the installation process just forgot to make one for you. Name
resolution happens in glibc; do you think that Red Hat altered glibc
to get rid of /etc/resolv.conf functionality?

Hi,

You need to describe your hardware in detail. Also memory and swap
disk size. Is it a Linux only machine or dual boot?

I just remembered that I have a Vibra card in the closet. I got it out,
tried it, and had exactly the same problem, so it's not the card. This
narrows things down a bit, but it could still be a bad board or a bad midi
file (or a bad driver for the first problem).

I have patched the latest version of wu-ftpd 2.5.0 according to Red Hat
Security Advisory [RHSA-1999:031]

Source: ftp://updates.redhat.com/6.0/SRPMS/wu-ftpd-2.5.0-5.6.0.src.rpm

In addition, a few enhancements have been made based on J.D. Li works,
which include:

** Smart CD: when you perform a "cd" command, now no longer case
sensitive, and for directory with long name, you can just key-in the
first few characters, it will search the directory for you. Very
convenience.

** Show uptime at the beginning of connection.

** Improved several system logging features.

You can get the file here:

ftp://MSIA.pine.ncu.edu.tw/pub/linux/wu-ftpd-2.5.0-smartcd.tar.gz

The J.D. LI modification are defined at the end of config.h, remove the
defines if you don't like these new features.

To install, just type "build lnx" follow by "build install".

PS: MSIA.pine.ncu.edu.tw is currently running this version of wu-ftpd,
you can try the Smart-CD feature with this FTP.

Enjoy!!

I would reccomend not downloading it, but instead buying a CD from somewhere
such as http://www.cheapbytes.com or http://www.linuxmall.com. I would also
reccomend using Caldera Openlinux 2.2, Redhat 6.0, or Mandrake 6.0. If this is
your first Linux install, then find a Linux friend buy a boxed version with
support.

Is the 690 one of HP's PPA printers? If so you're SOL until
someone writes a color driver. Tim Norman has some really
slick software to let PPA printers print in BW (he's working
on color).

This is not RedHats fault. The Oracle binaries use glibc2.0 calls while
RedHat is equipped with glibc2.1. Look at the Oracle site
(technet.oracle.com) in the download section, you will find a patch
for that problem, I believe it's called glibcpatch.tgz.
After applying that patch, oracle will run fine on a RH 6.0 computer.

Type 'make install' or copy the System.map to /boot/ manually.

I agree with you that Slackware is better if you want a no-nonsense
secure linux server. However, it is also more difficult to install
and to maintain for the new user. If you want an easy-to-setup
workable linux workstation, use RH or Suse (never tried Debian).

It is not the black-and-white case that this distro sucks and that
distro rules. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Why doesn't it surprise me that Stroustrop came up with this lame idea.
For a man that had the opportunity to clean up the C syntax and make it
more readable yet managed the impressive task of making it even more of an
dogs dinner than it already was, he really should have learnt his lesson by
now. I just wish academics like him would crawl back into their ivory towers
and shut the doors for good since they seem to forget that programming
languages are tools to be used by people, not machines, and therefor should be
as syntactically clear as possible, not look like line noise.

You can either use "SMTP after POP" or relay mail for some domains or
adresses only.

Lucky you, I could never get Oracle to install at all on RH 5.1.

Ignore that message, its not important.

Slackware is good if you want a command line Linux system to use as a back
end server. Unlike RH you have to get your hands dirty to fully set it up and
setting up X is a steep learning curve since you have to use good old xconfig.
I use slackware myself since A) Its cheap, B) I don't need all the extra
rubbish that comes with RH and C) I'm quite capable of setting everything up
myself. I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner tho, Slackware is definately
a techies distribution.

RH are certainly trying to appeal to the windows market and good luck to
them. Non technical people are not going to use Linux if they have to set
everything up manually no matter how reliable it is (and I include most
Windows "admins" where the only difference between them and a user is they
have a Dummies Guide on their shelve and know the MS support phone number)

Don't, copy you're new System.map to the correct location.
