I re-installed "Caldera Open Linux" and tried to install LILO but it said
something about my kernel exceeding 1024 cylinders.
I am thinking about Re-Partitioning my harddrive to smaller partitions.
Now on C:\ drive I have a 8 gig partition for Windows 98 and a 2.5 gig for
Linux.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

I'm using Red Hat 6/Apache/PHP3.0.12/Oracle. I've suddenly started
getting an error I've never seen before:

<b>Warning</b>: OCIFetchInto: ORA-01002: fetch out of sequence
 in <b>type1.inc</b> on line <b>36</b><br>

I can't see anything wrong with my code or queries. Does anyone know
what can cause this? The output from 'oerr ora 01002' is written in
advanced Oracle-speak which I don't understand ;-)

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm just wondering if I should install Linux. I'll need to buy a new hard
disk to install it. Besides reliability and not being Microsoft, what are
the real benefits of it? There seems to be a shortage of software for it,
for example apps like Quicken, Bryce 3D, games and drivers for scanners and
LS-120 drives. All the windows programs that have an equivelant for Linux
are not as good (for example, Office 2000 vs StarOffice). I would like to
switch completely to Linux if the software support was better. So, should I
install linux?

What about /tmp? Did you put it on a separate partition or is it on /?

/etc is quite often written to. Examples: mtab, issue. Of course it
depends on how often you boot your machine and mount your CD, floppy and
other file systems.

Does anyone know how I can set the default shell for a whole group, so
that when I create users who belong to that group I do not need to
manually edit the /etc/passwd file afterwards? I use Red Hat Linux 6,
and am wanting to have the 'POPUSERS' default to /usr/bin/passwd - as
opposed to a false terminal.

Many thanks for your help,

Yup! I got it wrong all the way through! All I had to do was remove
the line mentioning the mem size and it all worked fine. I think you
only have to declare mem over 64 MB in the lilo.conf in 2.0.x kernel
versions, not 2.2.x

thanks for the hint

You have to update the initialisation scripts, among other things, so
you lose any local moodifications. Also, several devices changed
their names.

As I said, it entails lots of unnecessary work. Besides, the 2.2.*
kernel is still reputed to be buggier and less stable.

I have an HP Pavilion PII at 400Mhz. I have W98 installed on it. I
want to run linux, but I'd prefer to purchase a separate hard disk since I
have critical stuff on the original disk, and being a newbie.....
After installing a 2nd disk, can I load linux exclusively on the 2nd
disk leaving the original untouched? How would I boot? Would it be
possible to run Windows, and then start a linux session in a Window? I have
RH 5.2 now. Is there a compelling reason to upgrade to 6?
    Thanks for your help.

if you're having problems with all the directories, try what i did:
the RPMS directory is the biggest (+-450MB) i selected only it for

the next day i downloaded the rest. manually.
