well I apologize for asking for help on a modem problem that I had without
checking if my modem was indeed a freak'n win modem. which I found out it
was and I recommend any one who has problems using a PCI modem to make sure
that it is not a win modem. all of my documentation for my modem did not
tell me the in formation I needed. after an extensive search on the
Internet I am now officially an idiot for jumping the gun on the question of
why won't my modem work.

if anyone uses a PCI modem with linux..... I would like to know what it
is, how much it cost's, and where I can get that model. or if any of you
have information on a good external modem to use that info would also be a

apologizes for the lengh of this message but circonstances are important
to understand the final question...
and apologize for my english

my system :
slackware 7.0
my modem is a cable modem : motorola with ethernet connection
my provider : cybercable ( french society who trust access to cable
modem access in my country )
my dhcpd daemon : 2.0
dhcp client : 1.3.18-pl1.diff.gz

in the night of 3-4 mars I go out and when I return in my home I see the
upload led who works without internet network applications launched
In France we paid for upload traffic ( 50 cents / mo ) and we have a
html page to see our consommation ; In 8 hours I have 500 mo in upload
traffic ;

I have thought that someone had cracking my firewall and I have had the
stupid idea not to log in my firewall script ...
But after this error I have modify my firewall script and I shutdown
every night my cable modem ...
Few days after , and irregularly , BUT NOT ALL DAYS , just after I start
my modem ( I precise that my linux station is always started, just the
modem is up or down ) , my upload led works again and again and the only
thing to stop it is the shutdown of my linux station ( or kill dhcpd
daemon )

I have remarked with a tcpdump that the cause of all traffic is dhcp
traffic !!!
millions of request go out my home , it's an eternal process

I use slackware since two months without problems before that ; I know
there was a problem with particular versions of pump under redhat or
mandrake who created an irregular but all days traffic and not eternaly
contrary to my problem ;

Like these problemes are not daily : is the client or is the server who
is the responsible ? or both ?
how to find the solution to this strange and expansive problem ( 250 $
min ...)?

another question : since I have these problem I thought that dhcp daemon
was used by linux as dhcp server for my internal network if I have as
dhcp client ...but there are others packages for dhcp client
(1.3.18-pl1.diff.gz); why kill dhcpd daemon resolve my problem when
upload is mad even though it's the client who is respnsible normaly ?

even If you don't have a solution , I appreciate help to create a
procedure in order to find origin of my problem and a solution of course

It not only existed - it had been ported to everything else. One of
the first clones I used was something called Z pr PCZ on MSDOS.
Apart from a size limitation (32K or 64K or something), it was
the nicest editor available on DOS.

Cursor addressing? I didn't even have a screen when I first programmed a VAX.

HI, i have a damn problem around here. After starting at my new job
my first action was to change all IIS servers to apache. <applause>
thnxthnx :))

BUT! i have currently ONE last problem i cant solve
they used a redirect from

/redir/cards
 to
"http://www.atptour.com/playground/frameset.asp?s1=/playground/navig/c
ards_head.html&s2=/playground/cybercards/default.asp$Q"

$Q means at IIS the query that was delivered with....

so i did this to apache:

 RedirectMatch /redir/cards(.*)
ards_head.html&s2=/playground/cybercards/default.asp$1"

Well it seems to work properly BUT the final string is not as it
shuold be. the questionmark becomes a "%3f" (the one behind the
frameset.asp). Thats why we get an 404 ('cause there is in fact no
frametset.asp%3f ... )

i also tried the Rewrite-Engine but the result were always the same:
correct:
http://www.atptour.com/playground/frameset.asp?s1=/playground/navig/ca
rds_head.html&s2=/playground/cybercards/default.asp?id=5E335BA55A78451

You donīt need a special tool, ntfs is supported by the kernel (if
compiled in). You can mount your ntfs partition by typing
"mount -t ntfs partition mountpoint"
where partition is the device name of it (e.g. /dev/hda2) and
mountpoint where you want it mounted (e.g. /mnt)

What font are you using to print? Built-in printer font or a graphic

Have you tried changing the font?

And the relevance to the statement above is exactly where?
For one, the fact that the devices have to be able to share IRQs doesn't
mean that the drivers support it as well. Second, - as noted above -
the video cards in Linux don't use IRQs at all. Third, there are a lot
of PCI devices that do not like shared IRQs at all (ISDN cards, for
example, are notorious for this behaviour), although they should be
able to do it. Forth, "device is busy" in combination with a PCI
modem looks like a winmodem problem.

This may help a bit:

Restore

To restore data to a "Clean" hard disk on a Unix system

Before you begin:

1. If you not sure of the Boot/Root floppy, recreate it. Test it's
integrity by booting from it.

To make a Boot/Root floppy:

Log in as root.

  1.. Type: mkdev fd <ret>
2.. Be sure to choose option #4, "Boot and Root floppy".
3.. Test disk by booting from it.
2. Use the "sysadmsh" command to perform a complete filesystem backup.

To restore data:

 1. Install new hard disk. Do Not relinquish your old hard disk until
the restore to the new disk is complete and verified.

 2. If you wish to have a DOS partition on the disk, you must use the DOS
fdisk programme to install the DOS partition(s) first.

 3. Boot the computer from the Boot/Root floppy.

4. Initialise a filesystem and make the disk bootable by typing the
following commands:

  # /etc/fdisk

Select "Use Entire Disk for Unix" unless you have set-up a DOS partition.

 # /etc/divvy -b 1 -c 1 -I

Use the default swap allocation, and the answer is "N" to the "separate /u
filesystem" and "block-by-block control" questions. Also make a note of the
number of blocks allocated to the filesystem.

 # dd if=/etc/masterboot of=/dev/hd00

 # dd if=/etc/hdboot0 of=/dev/hd0a

# dd if=/etc/hdboot1 of=/dev/hd0a bs=1k seek=1

 # sync

# fsck /dev/hd0root

# mkfs /dev/hd0 xxxxxx

Where XXXXXX is the number of blocks allocated to the filesystem (noted from
divvy command above). If mkfs does not recognise "/dev/hd0", use
"/dev/hd0root".

 # sync

 # fsck /dev/hd0root

 5. Place the back-up tape into the tape drive. Make sure the tape is
write protected.

Type the following commands to restore the backed-up data:

 # /etc/mount /dev/hd0root /mnt

 # Restore rf /dev/rct0 /dev/hd0root

If your tape device is not /dev/rct0, substitute the proper device name in
this command. (The command "restore tf /dev/rct0" will show the creation
date of the back-up, while the command "restore tf/dev/rct0" will list the
contents of the tape). When tyou get the message "last chance before
scribbling.."", press Return.

 # /etc/umount /dev/hd0root

 # sync

 # sync

 # /etc/haltsys

#. Remove the Boot/Root floppy and reboot from the hard disk.

 7. Put system into single user mode (system maintenance mode) and run
"fsck".

Kind regards,

Marc.

Hi, Jim:

Just now I followed your advice. g++ works. Thanks a lot. Now I
can try more complex programs. Just wonder why the compiler doesn't
complain but the linker (ld) barks. It seems to me that the gcc
knows the source file is a C++ file (by the cxx extension), then why
couldn't it forward this message to the linker?

Again I'd like to thank you for your quick reply.

  Best regards,

Liu Bin

Just did this for the first time on Linux myself with PartitionMagic

a tool that'll work on just about any OS's disks, it may be worth the
money to you. I've used it for years. At http://www.powerquest.com and

Most ISP's that I've tried work fine with Linux, just plug in the same
details as you would with any Win dial-up connection.

I think what you really need is a guide to setting up PPP connections with
Linux, then just drop in your usual Win details (ISPs I've tried with no
probs in Linux include C&W, BT, Freeserve).

Of course, if you need tables, or mail merge, or any of several other

more comparable to the old Windows Write.)

Well, aside from the soundcard problem, 2.3.99 works flawlessly on my
