Yes, it was a misspelled name in the original post by spikey-the AI humanoid. ;-)

Are you sure that the KVM is the problem? I get these symptoms
when I define an IMPS2 mouse as PS2. I also use a KVM, BTW
(Genie, not Belkin), and only have problems when the mouse is
in motion during the switch.

What kind of PC is this ? The only ones I've ever seen that couldn't
access the BIOS were some IBM aptivas. They had "fixed" the BIOS where
the user could not access it and in theory not hose it up, but if you
wanted to upgrade the HD you had to buy the new HD and a BIOS upgrade
from them. I doubght if uninstalling BM will make any difference, I'm
not familiar with it but it's worth a shot. I can't see any software
preventing access to the BIOS. Access to the BIOS is done during the
system boot and before any OS/software has been loaded.

Check the permissions on /var/log/messages, it should be owned by root
with rw access. If not try using chmod and chown commands to fix it (
and who does own it if not root ? )

Random freezes, especially during heavy operations like compilations,
*should* lead to suspicion of hardware problems.

First: Have you overclocked your machine? Overclocking can definitely lead
to such problems.

Second: Read log-files, especially /var/log/messages, and see if there's
something strange going on.

Third: If you are comfortable fooling around inside the computer, try to
remove a piece of RAM, and see if it helps. If it does, it's likely that
it was that piece of RAM that was bad. If it doesn't, remove another piece of
RAM and put the first one back in. Repeat until all RAM has been cleared.

Fourth: IRQ conflicts. Read /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports, and see if
you can find all hardware that you expect to find. PCI units can safely
share interrupts, IDE units can not.

Now you should have enough clues to start looking for mistakes. I'm by
no means a full expert on this matter, so others might have more clues
than me. If you have a local Linux guru, you should have him look at
the machine. A Linux box should not behave like that.

I ended up figuring out the problem. My arp tables in /var/named were out
of whack. Guess that's what happens when you try configuring with BOTH
command line and gui driven tools. I'll stick to the former here on in.

All problems I mentioned are now solved. Sorry for the hassle.

I too have had trouble installing Corel linux on my DOS\Windows partition,
but I do know a program that can help you recover that hard disk space.
Follow this URL to download: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10106-
100-2181581.html?tag=st.dl.10001_103_1.lst.td; extact the files to a
bootable floppy and restart your system. At the DOS prompt run
A:\Presizer.exe. When the program loads choose option 1 to rezize your
partition to the full extent of your hard drive. Hope it works.

and like to run a fortran program.

Keyboard input is with read(*,*) in fortran
and on _some_ systems i simply cannot "DELETE"

I have no idea why, any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. I've checked (the jumber settings), and the HD is
master on the primary IDE port and the CDROM is slave on the secondary.

One piece of info that may be relevant - it a CD-RW (Smart and friendly

I've installed the version of jdk1.1.7 that's part of the current Debian
stable release. I let apt set everything up, and it didn't produce any
errors. Whenever I try to run javac, java or any of the other binaries,
I get the following error (newlines added by me):

/usr/lib/jdk1.1/bin/../bin/i686/green_threads/java: error in loading
shared libraries:
/usr/lib/jdk1.1/bin/../lib/i686/green_threads/libjava.so: undefined

Anyone seen this before? I'm running with glibc 2.1.3; do I perhaps
need libc5 support for this?

Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't read that correctly. If your Windows machine is the one
that can't reach hosts by their domain names, you need to set your
nameservers on the Windows machine. If your linux machine can ping
www.linux.org, set your Windows nameserver(s) to whatever values are in
/etc/resolv.conf on your Linux machine.

Subject: Why do FTP downloads stall under RH6.2 linux
Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2000 21:29:09 GMT

Platform: RedHat 6.2 patched to kernel 2.2.14-6.0.1, using Earthlink as
my ISP for PPP dial-up
with a 56K PCI modem made by Actiontec.

Problem: Access to Web pages via Netscape 4.72 and interactive login
sessions via telnet work fine, with
transfer speed typically near the maximum throughput reported as by the
RH Network Monitor in GNOME.
The problem is when I try to download files via FTP, especially large
binaries (*.rpm or *.gz).
After a few hundred kilobytes, the FTP simply stalls. If it picks up
again at all, it is typically at very slow bps,
and then it crawls along between successive stalls. This happens whether
I use Netscape (Save link as...),
an ftp session started on the command-line, or even using the excellent
program 'wget' (e.g., 'wget ftp://whatever...').
Clue #1: While a file transfer is stalled, network access via Netscape
to view Web pages and read news
or email transfer at high speed, up to 56K.
Clue #2: I have ran tests that show the problem is not on the ftp server
side (e.g., busy anonymous FTP servers).
For example, ftp stalls also occur while trying to download files while
logged into my personal (Solaris) computer
at work just 10 miles away (with a T1 connected to the net), which has
no other FTP users or other heavy system load.
Clue #3: There seems to be no problem with my DNS setup, since I can
ping and connect to servers all
over the net by domain name or IP address number.
Clue #4: FTP downloads using the same modem and ISP never stall like
this running Win98!

Similar problems with FTP stalling under Linux have been reported
repeatedly in the news group archives
(via DejaNews.com), with no definitive answers posted as far as I can
tell.
The symptoms described above suggest that the problem may be in the
Linux kernel, fttpd, the PCI modem driver,
or something else at a 'low level' in the system. Can someone from
Redhat or any Linux network guru please
inform us how to trouble-shoot and solve this mysterious problem?

Thanks in advance for any leads...

Hello,

I boot up linux in framebuffer high res mode and

The usual methods which apply to non-framebuffer

All i am able to get is either a block cursor or no cursor,

I tried "echo -e '\033[?blah...'" as suggested by

Please help. Thank you.
