It's worth remembering that the latest development kernels are not odd

I would initially start by checking for duplex mismatches. Then
check the drive options with hdparm. Check for DMA, block mode and

I'm having the same problem with RedHat 6.2 the Ugate 3000 Gateway. I
too have opened port 21 and 21. But what I see is that the PASV tries
to open ports 1024:65535.

See /etc/lilo.conf -- you can use rdev to specify the / partition,
but you can override it via lilo.

See man 5 printcap as there you can specify for each printer whether and
when to send a FF.

See the printer's configuration though too, as it might do it by itself
and if both doesn't help, well, then come back 8-)

Cheers,

Then again, two weeks later, my cache is only at 10 megs. This is still
twice what it's supposed to be, but it does seem to be controlled, at
least. Hmm.

a) Log in as user, and then use
su
to log in as root.
You should NOT be using telnet anyway. It is very dangerous to use
telnet since the passwords can easily be sniffed.

b) Install ssh and use it instead. It is much more secure.

Subject: Problem with X on laptop
Date: 19 Nov 2000 00:57:41 GMT

I'm running RedHat 7.0 on a P100 Toshiba laptop, and I'm having a problem
with X. It works if I set it to 16 bit color depth, but when I tried to
use 24 bit, which is supported by my video device, I am told that there
are no valid clock timings. The device is a Chips & Technologies CT65550,
with 2MB of video RAM. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Find a working machine that's running Linux or DOS/Lose9x. Take the
distro CD and a couple of blank floppy disks. On the distro CD you will
find a directory called "disks" and another directory called "dosutils".
If you're on a DOS machine, use the RAWRITE.EXE located in the dosutils
directory to copy the "bootdisk" file to a blank floppy. If on a Linux
machine, just
  dd if=/mnt/cdrom/disks/bootdisk of=/dev/fd0
after you've put a blank floppy in the floppy drive.

Boot from the bootdisk you've created. Fairly early on, it should ask
for the CD-ROM--insert it, and continue with normal installation. HTH,

A) Crossposting to more than about 4 groups is considered rude, and crossposting
to more than 6 will get the post cancelled by most news servers.

B) The best answer to your question is "Don't." But if you really really gotta,
edit /etc/securetty. What you should do is disable telnet entirely and use SSH
or OpenSSH.

No. It's not normal.

On my Pentium 133, 64 MB system, boot to login prompt is 70
seconds loading the kernal off the floppy. Using a boot floppy with
only lilo on it and loading the kernal off the hard drive, boot time
is 50 seconds.

I have done nothing special to speed up the boot process.

There could be an explicit path specified in /etc/modules.conf
(or /etc/conf.modules).
