I have yet to find a pdf file that ghostscript 6.3 will not
handle, but that Acroread will. I don't doubt that they exist,
but ghostscript seems to have closed large gaps in its pdf
usage between 6.0 and 6.3. I hardly ever use acroread anymore
on machines that have gs 6.3 installed.

Xpdf, on the other hand, still has its issues.

It'll be a function of your init scripts. I can't tell without looking.
You need to read the manual for your init and find out what it does on
a change of runlevel, then read the indicated scripts.

Again, it's up to your init scripts.

Goto
      ftp://ftp.dlink.com/adapters/dfe530tx/info.htm

for information and drivers. They seem to have another card
called dfe530tx+. Could that be your problem?

And if all else fails, consult Becker's page at

Look on your card for chip names.

Hi.

I've got a problem. A real one.

About three years ago we bought a killer machine (by thoose days), a
Fujitsu-ICL teamserver M754i, a quad PPro with 512MB RAM . The machine
has been running OK until the moment we needed to upgrade the OS (that
was UnixWare 2.1.2.) in order to install Oracle8i. The option were to
spend lots of money and learning time with Unixware 7 or to install (
tachannn!) Linux. We took the second option.

I've been installing RedHat for several years, so I took the RedHat 7
CD-ROMs tha I had on my table, and I have succesfully installed several
times in dual Pentium machines, and went to install the above mentioned
machine. Installation went fine, but it was unable to boot the OS after
finishing. After sometime discarding possible causes of the problem, I
disabled the SCSI BIOS and got enought memory to boot from the boot disk
made by the installation procedure. It would have been OK (not fine, but
OK) except for the fact that the kernell in the floppy disk was a NON
SMP kernel.

The BIOS told that the conventional memory available was 576 KB, no
matter what options I enabled or disabled in the BIOS. There was no
means to disable the system BIOS shadow on RAM, the only option left to
increase the conventional memory. On the other hand, the kernell, when
it boots, recognizes all the installed memory. I think the problem is
with the boot loader that is unable to fit the whole kernel in memory
due to the low ammount of conventional memory. Do you agree?

>From this point on I've tried several booting options :
    - Making a boot disk with the smp kernel installed in the machine.
    - Using syslinux instead of lilo.
    - Compiling lilo with LARGE_EBDA enabled and making a boot disk.
    - Using GRUB instead of lilo
    - Using loadlin from a msdos 6.22 disk instead of lilo.
In the best cases the machine frozes after printing "OK, booting the
kernel" in the screen.

In the meantime I've got BootMagic and I'll try it on monday (if I dont
get any better suggestion).

Oh! Iforgot to tell you, I called Fujitsu support (Fujitsu Customer
Services) and I was told that there was no way of disabling the system
BIOS shadowing, that was a feature included in the design of the machine
and, by the way, Linux was not a supported OS for this machine. Good
luck and goodbye.

I would appreciate any suggesions, hints or workarounds to solve or
overcome this problem.

(Crying)
I've tried to cut my veins with a Windows98 CDROM, but it did not work
(even for this). Please help me!
(Serious again)

Thanks in advance.

Juan.

I installed OSS. The soundcard works, but the volume is very low. I played

idea? Is there a way to change the default volume settings in RedHat 7?

Subject: Basic questions about gtk-XEmacs
Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2000 12:53:58 -0700

I've compiled and installed the version of XEmacs ported to gtk by William Perry.
I have a few very basic questions concerning its use, some of which may apply
to Emacs, some to XEmacs, and some specifically to the gtk port (or even to
Linux, X, GNOME, ...).

I am using Red Hat 6.2 with GNOME as my desktop. I think it's version 1.1 of
GNOME, but because of a bug or oversight, the GNOME about panel doesn't
mention a version number.

1. Drag and drop for files doesn't seem to work. For instance, there is no effect
when I drag a file from the midnight commander file manager onto any part of the
XEmacs window. How do I set up XEmacs for drag and drop?

2. Cut and paste doesn't work. If I copy or cut a section of text, the text
seems to go into the Emacs kill ring, rather than a system buffer. This means that
I have no way of cutting text from an XEmacs window into another application,
even another instance of XEmacs, or vice versa. How do I get cut and paste?

3. How do I load a tex mode into XEmacs. (This is a basic emacs setup question).
The command
M-x auctex-package
has no effect.

4. How do I customize the colors. Emacs commands like
M-x set-background-color
aren't recognized. Presumably there is a way of setting this through the options menu.
Unfortunately, the options menu hierarchy is so disorganized that I can't find
it if it's there. (By the way, whoever created that menu layout is clearly an
incompetent programmer. Can anyone explain why it remains a part of the
current XEmacs release?) How can I for instance set the background color
to white?

5. Can anyone explain to me in clear terms why Emacs forked with XEmacs,
why the FSF is so upset about XEmacs, and why the XEmacs team won't do
what the FSF wants to resolve the problem? There is a statement by Stallman
on the XEmacs home site, but I don't quite get the point. Even though XEmacs
is released under the GPL, Stallman needs some kind of legal papers from the
authors, and claims that the XEmacs authors refuse to cooperate. What's this
all about?

Any help appreciated.

Mark,
The firewall I am using is a Ugate 3200 Cable Modem sharing gateway.
You can't "load" any software on it really. The Ugate simply uses NAT
for firewalling. That's it. And it allows you to do virtual servers,
that is, point certain ports to certain internal devices. Other than
that, you can't really configure it. Any clues as to whether an
interal linux server could do this function by itself?

You are posting in the wrong forum, Take it to the kernel list.

But no, off the top of my head, 576KB should be fine for the loader,
particularly if it's a bzImage, which loads a bit, decompresses a bit,
loads a bit, decompresses a bit ... Yes, a zImage might have trouble.

That should be the winner, provided it's a bzImage and you have a
loadlin that supports bzImage. Then again, maybe it's worth trying a
zImage with loadlin.

> In the best cases the machine frozes after printing "OK, booting the

It looks like it's hitting the bios image in conventional memory, with
result death of bios, and dead machine because the bios is needed for
booting. You'll have to talk to the authors of the kernel boot code.
You might have to edit a bit of the kernels setup.c file that does
the reserviing of memory pages ... but no, you are getting hit before
that, when the machine is still in real mode.

I would guess that if you can boot NT, you might be able to use the NT
loader.

And a well written program will also have 'make uninstall' to remove the
files it installed outside of the install dir (binaries, manpages, etc.).
But if you deleted the source directories or the Makefile does not have
uninstall, you may not know what it installed unless you reinstall it and
make a note of the list of files.

This is what is called a kernel oops. Since you are running a 2.2.16
kernel, you should probably upgrade to 2.2.17 before you report the oops to
the kernel development mailing list, and if 2.2.18 comes out soon, you
should probably upgrade to _that_ before reporting it. Once you have
upgraded your kernel, if the problem still exists, then you'll need to have
the ksymoops package installed to 'decode' the oops messages before you send
it to the mailing list. The mailing list address is

How do they do that? What tools do you have available before you've

I just installed a Maxtor Ultra ATA/100 PCI Adapter Card and a Maxtor 30G

on it's IDE interface; there is no slave. I made no changes to this
original configuration. I made the new hard drive the primary master on the
new PCI controller. On the new drive, using fdisk, I created a 4G primary
partition and a 26G extended partition. I defined two logical drives on the
extended partition, 4G and 22G. I formatted each of the new partitions from
Me. Everything is recognized by my system and works fine. I want to
install Linux in the first partition on the new drive, but the Redhat 7.0
install does not list any of the partitions on the new hard drive. I suppose
this is because the new drive is controlled by the new PCI controller, but
that's where my technical expertise (or lack of it) ends. Anybody know what
I can do to get the install to recognize the new partitions. Thanx.
